Boy, 8, killed in canoe capsize, Toronto man facing impaired

Police have charged an Etobicoke man with impaired operation of a vessel after an eight-year-old boy died in the waters of the Muskoka River at High Falls Water Park Friday. They said a canoe capsized above High Falls and the lad apparently went over. He was wearing a life jacket but rescuers were unable to save him when he was found. He died at the scene. David Sillars, 37, has been charged with impaired operation of a vessel causing death and operating a vessel with a blood-alcohol level over 80 milligrams causing death. OPP said the boy is a Huntsville resident and Mr. Sillars is a friend of his family. He’s scheduled to appear in a Bracebridge court on May 9.
