Dad’s chocolate chip cookies gone but oatmeal survives

Mondelez International, owner of Christie’s, has discontinued Dad’s chocolate chip cookies and the product is finally disappearing from store shelves never, it seems, to return. The original Dad’s oatmeal and oatmeal chocolate chip milk-dippers are still being made. They date from 1929. The Dad’s brand is only available in Canada. It was created by the Sturges family in Los Angeles. Their winning formula for an oatmeal cookie took off in both Canada and the U.S. The U.S. franchises eventually went out of business and, in 1972, three Canadian franchises joined forces to create the Dad’s Cookie Company. It introduced the chocolate chip version in the early 1980s. In 1986, Dad’s became part of U.S.-based Nabisco, then in 2012 they were gobbled up by Mondelēz International, one of the largest snacks companies worldwide. But sales dwindled in the face of a world that has more brands of chocolate chip cookies than a tree has leaves.
