Oil blaze in Steeles wrecking yard day’s work for firefighters

A nasty oil-fed fire at an isolated auto-wrecker’s yard on Steeles Ave. between Staines and Sewell’s Rds. has kept Toronto fire personnel busy Thursday. At one point there were five alarms rung in to deal with the burning waste fuel. Pumpers from Pickering, Markham and Richmond Hill also joined the battle. It was noticed about 11 a.m. The flames spread to a low-level office on the property. CN Rail was notified to stop service along a track nearby because of smoke in the area. The auto-wrecker’s yard is far away from fire hydrants so a relay pump had to be used to pump water from one hydrant to the other to reach the fire.
