US rains missiles on Syrian base as Trump greets China’s Xi

The US has fired as many as 60 missiles onto the Syrian air base which was the source of the gas attack on civilians this week. The attack — called “proportional” called by the US in the circumstances — plastered the base even as President Trump was welcoming Chinese president Xi Jinping to Florida. He cast the assault as vital to deter future use of poison gas and called on other nations to join in seeking “to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria.” It was the first direct American assault on the Syrian government and Trump’s most dramatic military order since becoming president just over two months ago.
