Element of deja vu in Newgarden’s Honda Indy circuit win

Josef Newgarden has won his second Honda Indy Sunday. It’s the fifth career win for Newgarden, who also claimed the 85-lap course on the streets surrounding Exhibition Place in 2015. Alexander Rossi finished second, ahead of Canadian James Hinchcliffe. The Oakville man was also third in last year’s event. That marked his first podium finish in Toronto. Autosport says Penske victor Newgarden claimed the win after inheriting a lead via a well-timed yellow in Toronto. He moved into first place due to pitting one lap before a caution period, performing a similar strategy to Alexander Rossi and James Hinchcliffe. All three benefited, says Autosport, when Tony Kanaan locked up his rear black Firestone tyres at Turn 1 when coming out of the pitlane on lap 23 of 85.
