Etobicoke wants free vote in Legislature

Etobicoke Community Council has voted 11 to 8 to ask Premier McGuinty to stage a free vote in the Legislature on whether Toronto should have subways or LRTs. It’s a remarkable request which seems to have little chance of happening. “The recent decision by Council to move ahead with above-ground light rail transit initiatives poses a number of concerns,” the letter says. It was tabled at community council this morning by Councillor Cesar Palacio.

  1. Why should Queen’s Park decide on this? A better plan is to ask for Toronto to have the status of a province — like the German cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen. And, of course, the budget to go with it.
