South Bayviewites may be extra happy they live in a neighborhood with reasonable parking in light of the nasty dispute that has pitted one side of Macpherson Ave against the other. The sharp north-south division surfaced during the first of two neighbourhood meetings regarding eliminating the fair-minded policy of alternate street parking on Macpherson. About 30 people turned out at Belmont House on Wednesday night to hear well-organized people from the north side make their case to put all the parking permanently on the south. What you say? Why? Apparently the north-siders have been conspiring away for months to get rid of the cars in front of their houses. They were able, in fact, to generate the staff report that says moving parking permanently to the south side of the street would create 10 more parking spaces. (It also says street cleaning would be more difficult.) Their demands were read by a youngish Yuppie, who is obviously the leader. While his presentation was forceful, it was not strong on logic. His statement did not explain how adding 10 spaces to Macpherson would solve probldem parking. Three City staff and Ward 27 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam were present. The City staffers distributed a map of the 5H parking area and disclosed that there are 347 spaces for permits and only 300 have been issued. The area includes Marlborough Place, Marlborough Avenue, Macpherson, Molson Street, both sides of Roxborough Ave. W., Gibson Avenue, Ramsden Park Road and Pears Avenue. The south side residents have asked for time to answer this surprise attack. With files from Yonge and Roxborough News
