Archie Andrews, that incredibly adolescent love-sick dope who’s been mooning over Veronica for 73 years, is about to get shot. Really? Yes. It’s all part of what the new owners of the Archie Comics franchise call doing something “impactful” that will resonate with the world and bring home just how important Archie is to everyone. Well okay, but what does Archie do for an encore? The Archie Comics publisher Jon Goldwater doesn’t say. It is a demise that fits the 21st Century world well. Archie will be gunned down July 16, 2014, protecting his gay friend Kevin Keller. Keller’s character first joined Veronica Lodge, Betty Cooper, Jughead Jones and Reggie Mantle in the Archie Comics spin-off “Veronica” in 2010. Archie Andrews was created in 1941 by Bob Montana along with his original characters of Jughead, Betty and Veronica. Archie went on to launch a thousand comic book and other stories. Montana was 21 when he created Archie based on his own experience as a high school kid. An editor helped him write good copy for his characters and Montana drew the Archie comic strip for the next 35 years. He saw it published in more than 750 newspapers. Here’s hoping that Archie somehow or other comes back to life. Images: Archie’s demise and (below) Archie as we knew him.
