The community Facebook page Leaside Chit Chat has many remembrances of David Stickney, the Leaside High School mathematics teacher who died this week. There is also a Facebook Tribute Page to the late teacher.
Mr. Stickney died while watching a softball game played by a girl’s club that he helped coach. On Chit Chat, Janet Ahier recalled many good times in the Spring at “Stickney Farm.”
Steve White noted the outpouring of sympathy. There were more than 100 comments logged in only three hours. Good friend Nicholas Mitchell recalled that “Stick” was not just a Leaside student and football player but also the school captain. “He played centre on the football team and his nickname was Tank, Mr. Mitchell said.
Arthur (Alfie) Peneycad recalled Mr. Stickney from the 1950s when they were neighbours on Cameron Crescent. He wrote: “We played street hockey and football together. David started teaching in Oshawa. He once told me that he got his teaching style from his old Leaside math teacher “Pop Stafford”.
Dave was the one that mentored me and got me through algebra, trigonometry and geometry (1965). Everyone knew Dave. He had a nickname for everyone. David and I spent Spring Break together with Jack Hardy and John Noseworthy in Daytona Beach. Dave was the Master of Ceremonies at my wedding.
If anyone should be called “Mr. Leaside” there (is) no one more deserving than Dave. Below, Larrry Hurd posted an old video of David Stickney. Beloved math teacher died watching softball game

RIP Tank, you were the glue that kept the memories alive in all our hearts, you had a nickname for all of us which stay with us today, we will never forget you, you were a special person Tank and you didn’t know it because that wasn’t who you were. You were genuine and had an amazing sensitivity for people. You will be missed my friend.

I remember Mr. Stickney teaching the basics of relative motion by putting his chair on top of his desk, climbing up and sitting on the chair, and paddling with two yard sticks and explaining his motion relative to the water around him versus us watching him from the shore. I remember Mr. Stickney letting us come into his office before a math exam and letting us touch his bust of Sir Issac Newton for good luck. I remember lots of shinny games at Trace Manes Park with Mr. Stickney. I remember Mr Stickney teaching the advanced math class the course on Math of Finances … and telling us that this was going to be very difficult for us ‘academically’ smart guys, because now we would see if we had “street smarts” about bonds, and annuities and shares. good memories
RIP, and I do have very fond memories of Mr Stickney.
Great video! I was lucky enough to be at LHS while Norman McLeod was still the principal. There was a lot of love and respect for the man. Obviously David felt the same way too. .
Hi Heather. I shot that video in 1985 for the 40th Reunion. Can you contact me? teevguy@yahoo.com. I want to get the LHS Alumni Assn. going again and need your help. Thanks, Larry
