Canada Post has announced that it is putting the construction of community mailboxes on hold. The move comes as a result of the election of the Liberal Party which has said it would stop the progressive end of door-to door mail. In a statement, the Post Office said: “Efforts are now underway to place the comprehensive program on hold in an orderly fashion” The halt to community mailbox conversion reportedly involves about 460,000 addresses across Canada that are already in the process of being switched over from door-to-door service. While the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is urging Prime Minister-designate Trudeau to pick up the phone, Canada Post says it’s awaiting a call. In statement released on Monday, the Crown Corporation says that “all conversions” planned for November and December 2015, and those scheduled to follow in 2016, will be placed “on hold”. The announcement comes one week after Canadians elected Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, who have promised to reinstate home mail delivery.
