Fire chief Jim Sales retires after four-month absence

Toronto Fire Chief Jim Sales has announced his retirement from the office. Sales made the announcement Friday at the end of a largely unexplained four-month leave that began in May. Details remain unclear but Mr. Sales said he was proud of his time as chief. J.W. (Jim) Sales was appointed Toronto’s new Fire Chief in a City Council vote in 2012. He had extensive fire department experience, coming to Toronto from the City of Barrie’s Department of Community Operations. Then he had been chief of fire departments in both Markham and Edmonton. Sakes was scheduled to return to work on September 27. He had been drawing his salary of more than $222,000 a year during while off work.
