Donald Trump has been interviewed by Bild, the large German newspaper. He told it that he plans to impose a 35% import tax on Mercedes, BMW and VWs if the vehicles are not made in the U.S. It is a bold perhaps impossible threat but it had a chilling effect Friday on German business. In Canada, these cars are enormously popular but it is even truer here that the Germans have not invested locally. Unlike the Japanese Big Two, Toyota and Honda, who have plants in Ontario, German carmakers have never assembled a car in this country. CBC
