Farm Boy (and others) want to make it big in Toronto

The Ottawa-based grocery chain Farm Boy will open shortly in Etobicoke, apparently the first of a number of stores it hopes to launch in Toronto. Whether the firm’s country-boy act will top the organic act of Whole Foods or the super-organic act of Organic Garage, set to open in Leaside, remains to be seen. Nothing seems to stop the price of fresh produce from going up although grocers will tell you that the profit margin on such goods is fractional. Prices can also be all over the place. California mandarins (now sold out) were seen with prices ranging from $1.99 a pound to $2.99 a pound for exactly the same orange just a mile apart in South Bayview. As to Farm Boy, Star writer Karon Liu says the 20,000-square-foot west end store will open this fall at the Shoppes of Alderwood plaza at 841 Brown’s Line. Many non-food items not carried by Farm Boy. They suggest you buy things like toilet paper and toothpaste online on Amazon
