Faithful, vigilant friend and guard Mona Piper has died

Mona Piper, the faithful and vigilant crossing guard who manned the corner of Cleveland St. and Millwood Rd. for 43 years, has passed away at the age of 88. She was the longest-serving crossing guard in the City and might have been on the job to the day of her death had she not taken a fall last year. The news was passed on by Josh Matlow (Ward 22) who announced Piper’s death on Twitter Wednesday. Mona Piper was a legend in the area and lifelong friend to many students, parents and staff at Maurice Cody Junior Public School.

  1. My crossing guard from grade 3-6 she was amazing I loved talking to her to and from school, always so encouraging. I went to school with John.

  2. Mona Piper served not only as School Crossing Guard for almost 40 years – but also friend, wife and mother. I was honoured to know and serve with Mona Piper, a dedicated community servant, for ten years on the School Crossing Guard Association Executive, and fellow School Crossing Guard. Thank you, Mona.

  3. I have many fond memories of Mrs. Piper. All the years crossing on the way to/from Cody. A dear sweet sole. I happened to be in the neighbourhood a few years ago and saw her in a coffee shop. I recognized her even though it had been probably 30 years or more. I approached her and she confirmed who she was and when I mentioned my name she recalled me (well more my brother, who went to school with John). Whenever our Cody friends get together, we often remember Mona. We’ll be sure to raise a toast in her honour when we all get together next time.

I too just lost my mom on January 2nd. She was also a friend of Mrs. Piper’s and Mrs. Bellamy. My condolences to your family.

  4. So sorry to hear of Monas passing,I stayed at Monas house in the summer of 1977. We all went to England that summer to visit her relatives,I remember when John and myself would clean out the milk truck and when she said supper was ready you better get cleaned up fast and get to that table, very lovely woman, she was there for Me when I needed a place to stay

  5. A wonderful lady who always had a smile and time for everyone. As she would pass our homes on her way shopping or on her way home, she always had time for a “hello”

  6. Heartbreaking news. My deepest condolences to her family. When I was little I’d been gifted a My Little Pony that meant the world to me. It was unfortunately stolen one day at school which devastated me. Mrs Piper had asked why I was so upset as I was bawling my eyes out the whole way home. A few days later, when walking through her crosswalk, she handed me a simple brown paper lunch bag and said “make sure your mom say she it’s ok first”. She had bought me a new My Little Pony to replace my stolen toy.

I’m 40 now, and have never forgotten how caring a special she was, and she’s will be missed.

  7. A sad day. Thought she’d be in the hood forever, she was always there. Will remember her fondly and think of her every time we pass Cleveland, Millwood and Davisville. Thoughts to her family.

  8. Oh my goodness. I loved walking or driving by Mona. She always had a great smile and friendly wave. She also made sure all three of my children got to school safely.

    The Donsky family.
