Doctor’s license revoked for inseminating unwitting women

Ontario’s medical regulator has revoked the licence of an Ottawa fertility doctor who used his own sperm as well as that of the wrong donors to artificially inseminate several women over three decades. The discipline committee for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario ruled Tuesday that Dr. Bernard Norman Barwin committed professional misconduct and failed to maintain the standards of the profession.

UNWITTING VICTIMS, CHILDREN STUNNED BY THEIR ORIGINS

Dr. Barwin’s malfeasances came to light in 2013 when the child of one such improper insemination began to question her origins. Among a number of things, Rebecca Dixon was the brown-eyed daughter of blue-eyed parents, a rare occurrence. DNA searches ultimately traced her birth father to Barwin. Her mother was only one of several women inseminated without their knowledge. The believed their pregnancies were caused by their husbands. CBC
