Laurie’s farewell
Hard luck corner at Mt. Pleasant and Manor
The lady known as Laurie has left a neatly-printed note at the door of the hard-luck former bank building at Mt. Pleasant and Manor Rd. to say that Birch Bistro is closed. The note is in the same polite style and delicate handwriting that Laurie used to announce that Birch would be opening in early 2017. It seemed then like a big undertaking. Rent cannot be cheap. The checkered history of the place as Celestin and Bar Mar had marked the spacious and pleasant location with serious doubt for many locals. The note carries no indication of why Birch closed but it includes the little pastry shop next door.
