Line One shut as outside construction breaks into tunnel

The TTC says a private contractor working at street level has drilled through a concrete subway tunnel, causing damage and extensive delays along Line 1 during the height of rush hour. Subway service was suspended both ways between Lawrence and St Clair stations about 2:30 p.m. Officials called the problem an infiltration of the tunnel. The project causing the intrusion is not named. At around 5 p.m., the TTC said they do not expect the closure to clear in time for the evening rush hour. Around 90 shuttle buses are running between York Mills and St. Clair stations, but customers are being advised to use alternate routes where possible. CP24 said a “reverse GO protocol” is also in effect because of the problem, meaning that customers can ride GO Transit between any two Toronto GO stations on a TTC fare.
