Remembrance Day: Sea of red & white for those who served

Each year on Remembrance Day, thousands of Canadian flags 🇨🇦 are planted across the Sunnybrook campus — a moving tribute to the Veterans who stood on guard for our country. Through Operation Raise a Flag, donations help support quality-of-life programs at Sunnybrook’s Veterans Centre (2075 Bayview Avenue) — one of Canada’s largest facilities dedicated to the care of war Veterans.

Originally opened in 1948 as a war Veterans’ hospital, Sunnybrook continues its proud legacy today in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, providing specialized cognitive, physical, mental health, and stroke care to those who have served.

There’s still time to take part or make a tribute gift in honour of Canada’s Veterans. Visit raiseaflag.ca to learn more or share a message of thanks.

From five to eight: New plans emerge for 922 Millwood Rd

A new development application has been submitted for 922 Millwood Road, the long-vacant lot at Millwood and Randolph that used to house Stanley’s Cleaners. The proposal requests Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendments to allow an eight-storey mixed-use building with residential units above street-level retail.

Key details from the City application: the building would deliver 60 residential units (a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units) and one retail unit at grade. Vehicular access is proposed from Krawchuk Lane, feeding two levels of below-grade parking with 29 parking spaces, and 68 bicycle parking spaces.

The application is currently under review by City planning staff. You can view the full submission and documents on the City of Toronto website here: City of Toronto — 922 Millwood Rd application.

What’s changed at the site

This parcel has seen several proposals over the past few years. Earlier plans envisaged a five-storey building with fewer units and, in later revisions, ground-floor retail. The current submission marks an increase in scale — both in height and unit count — compared with those earlier designs.

For background on previous proposals, see previous coverage:

Papa John’s Pizza is now open on Millwood (@ Rumsey)

Back in September, we shared a reader’s photo of the new Papa John’s location taking shape at 852 Millwood Road, near Trace Manes Park.

Fast-forward to now: the wait is officially over! Papa John’s Leaside opened its doors yesterday, and Grand Opening celebrations are underway.

As part of the festivities, the team will be giving away free small pizzas on Saturday, October 11th, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (while supplies last); and the Grand Opening special offers a large 4-topping pizza for $14.99.

We may have to skip breakfast on Saturday. 😉 🍕

(Editor’s note: Earlier reports mentioned an October 3rd opening and October 4th giveaway; these dates have since been updated.)

Mount Pleasant Clinic again welcoming new patients

Mount Pleasant Clinic is once again putting out the call for new patients — and this time, the call is bigger than ever.

Located at 245 Eglinton Ave. East (at Mount Pleasant), the clinic has now grown to 11 doctors, with four more scheduled to join in the coming months. That means there are additional openings on doctors’ rosters — a rare thing in midtown Toronto, where the search for a family physician can often be challenging.

Those interested can learn more or register directly through the clinic’s website: www.mpclinic.ca.

Papa John’s Pizza taking shape on Millwood Rd in Leaside

Edmund writes in from Millwood Road with a sneak peek at the new Papa John’s under construction at 852 Millwood. A sign promises an early September opening, but a look inside shows there’s still plenty to do — so it might be a little while longer before we’re picking up our first pies.

Thanks for the update, Edmund!

Stay tuned — and if you spot more local openings or changes on your walks, send us a note!

Harvest Fair and Corn Roast bring a weekend of local fun

Midtown is buzzing this weekend with two neighbourhood favourites returning for another year. Both Mount Pleasant and Leaside will be hosting family-friendly events, so there’s plenty to see, do, and taste close to home.

🍂 Mount Pleasant Harvest Fair

On Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mount Pleasant Village will once again transform into a bustling fall fair. Stretching from Davisville up to Eglinton, the street will be filled with local vendors, artisans, live entertainment, and kids’ activities. Admission is free, and it’s a great chance to support local businesses while soaking up the community vibe.

For more details, visit Mount Pleasant Village on Instagram.

🌽 Leaside Community Corn Roast

On Sunday, September 21 from 12 to 5 p.m., the Toronto-Leaside Rotary hosts its 29th annual Community Corn Roast at Trace Manes Park (110 Rumsey Rd). Expect face painting, inflatables, games, a fish pond, barbecue, and of course, fresh corn on the cob. This long-standing tradition brings neighbours of all ages together for a fun afternoon in the park.

For more information, visit the Toronto-Leaside Rotary website.

Signs up & doors ready: No Frills set to open on Bayview

Grocery gossip follow-up: the new No Frills at 1678 Bayview Avenue has announced they will open on September 11th, 2025. Fresh banners are up outside, with permanent signs still to come — so yes, the rumours were true, and Bayview is back in the grocery game.

25-storey development proposed at Eglinton & Bruce Park

Another new high-rise has been proposed near the Bayview–Eglinton intersection. An Official Plan Amendment and Rezoning application has been submitted for 550 Eglinton Avenue East, covering properties at 544–552 Eglinton East and 12–14 Bruce Park Avenue. The plan, designed by Studio JCI for developer Dez Capital Corporation, calls for a 25-storey purpose-built rental building with 256 residential units, ranging from studio to 3-bedroom layouts, and retail at street level.

According to the City of Toronto’s application details, the proposal includes two levels of underground parking with 58 spaces, along with 283 bicycle parking spaces. Indoor and outdoor amenities are also part of the plan. A paved access from Bruce Park Avenue is proposed to connect to the underground garage.

A virtual community consultation meeting is scheduled for September 24, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m., where residents can learn more and share feedback.
