•The Leaside Garden Society is continuing its Speaker Series with special guest David Chapman hosting the on-line Zoom meeting, “Wild, Weird & Wacky Weather!” on October 13th at 7p.m.
David’s photographic and video presentations are extraordinary. You will see some of the most beautiful collections of thunderstorms, northern lights and other weather phenomena found in Southern Ontario. In a province that is so vast and surrounded by the Great Lakes, it is no wonder we have some of the most interesting weather in the world. Discover how far south the Aurora Borealis can actually be seen. The presentation combines Ontario’s weather uniqueness, power and beauty all wrapped into one, they will also cover some other aspects of climate change and the effects on gardening. Jon Burnside announces candidacy for Councillor, Ward 16

•On Thursday, August 11 at 10:10 a.m. Jon Burnside will be filing his nomination papers and announcing his candidacy to become the next City Councillor for Ward 16, Don Valley East. Jon Burnside spent 10 years as a member of the Toronto Police Service and was elected to City Council in 2014. Burnside, who lives in Don Valley East, was the Councillor for Ward 26 from 2014-18 before it was absorbed into two other wards. Jon represented the communities of Wynford Heights and Flemingdon Park which are now part of Ward 16. Jon has most recently been Manager, Strategic Initiatives at City Hall. He continued his efforts to improve life in the city through his involvement with grassroots anti-gun violence and anti-human trafficking organizations. Burnside explains, “Serving as a City Councillor is a continuation of the work I’ve been doing for three decades to help improve life in our community and the city. I’m passionate about this community because I care about the people who live in it. My experience and leadership will be an asset to the next City Council.”

A 34-storey tower application for Bayview and Glazebrook

•A zoning by-law amendment application has been submitted for a 34-storey residential and commercial mixed-use building at 2 Glazebrook Avenue. 434 residential units are proposed with 314 square metres of retail. In total, 91 parking spaces are proposed within two levels of underground parking. The tower would be located on the north-west corner of Bayview Avenue and Glazebrook Avenue, immediately south of the Esso, and would require the demolition of the existing townhouses from 2 to 20 Glazebrook Ave (even numbers).

Bayview brunch spot, Eggstatic, is expanding west

•Eggstatic, the wildly popular brunch spot serving Instagram-worthy halal creations have announced that they are planning on opening a second location in Mississauga “very soon”. Located at 1568 Bayview Avenue, they are often filled to capacity and borrow patio space from Satay on the Road next door to satiate all of their guests’ cravings. The combined patio space has been a pandemic jewel for both Bayview businesses, offering a heated patio that can be enjoyed long after the conclusion of summer.
Davenport Garden Centre shuttered their Bayview location

•Davenport Garden Centre have been operating their flower business at 1466 Bayview Avenue since 2014, and this month they closed their doors for good. You can still visit them at their namesake location at 368 Davenport Road, or place your order online.
This little corner has been home to beautiful blooms for decades, if you remember, Garden Court Nursery used to operate in this location.
The property encompassing 1466 Bayview and 1500 Bayview (Valumart) is expected to be redeveloped with a brand new mixed use 8 storey building in the future.

• Strachan Avenue from Fleet Street to Lake Shore Boulevard West
• Jameson Avenue from Springhurst Avenue to Lake Shore Boulevard West

Metrolinx: Ontario Line investigative drilling in Thorncliffe

•Investigative drilling work along Overlea Blvd, Thorncliffe Park Drive and Millwood Road will take place, to advance design concepts and other structural plans for the Ontario Line. Metrolinx will be drilling test holes and using a vacuum truck to gather information and evaluate underground conditions. The Community Notice states that the work could be starting as early as July 25, 2022. Intersections impacted: Overlea Blvd & Millwood Rd; and Overlea Blvd & Thorncliffe Park Drive
