See link to National Post at bottom of post: The Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries was created by an act of the provincial legislature more than 180 years ago as a public trust and “property of the citizens,” a status that apparently went unchanged in 12 other Ontario laws affecting the group, passed as recently as 1989. Today, though, the organization styles itself as an independent non-profit corporation, its books withheld from public scrutiny and its three main directors — all pillars of the Toronto business and philanthropic establishments — accountable to neither the public nor the legislature. Bayview Ave is a long road in Toronto so there’s lots of opportunity for potholes, ponds and rough pavement. The Canadian Auto Association has once again ranked roads in Ontario and Bayview Ave is said to be the 10th worst. Our nomination for the best reason why is this man-made pond that forms outside 1581 Bayview whenever it rains. It’s been there for years and during rush hour it leads to the soaking of pedestrians. Here are the rankings.
1. Dufferin Street (Toronto)
2. Bunting Road (St. Catharines)
3. Burlington Street East (Hamilton)
4. Stanley Avenue (Niagara Falls)
5. Kraft Creek Road (Timmins)
6. Lawrence Avenue East (Toronto)
7. Carling Avenue (Ottawa)
8. Finch Avenue West (Toronto)
9. Kingston Road (Toronto)
10. Bayview Avenue (Toronto)

Black, Amiel share tender moment in garden
by •
Conrad Black and his wife, Barbara Amiel Black, appeared in the garden of their Bridle Path home this afternoon on Black’s homecoming from prison. They smiled, played with the family dogs and then stole a kiss (centre) as news media recorded the tender moment. These pictures are from publicly embeddable video from the CBC which can be seen at this freestanding page. Also available is the CBC story at length at this address.
Conrad Black out of prison in Florida
by •
A three vehicle group leaves the Florida prison where Conrad Black has been residing during a 42-month sentence for fraud and obstruction of justice. Black is thought to be in the third car, an SUV. “As of this morning, he’s not in our custody,” said Chris Burke, a spokesman for the U.S. prison bureau. But it’s not yet clear whether the former media baron has been able to savour the taste of freedom. Black was expected to be detained by U.S. immigration officials, since he doesn’t have American citizenship and could face deportation to either Canada or Great Britain.
Marathon will clog City on Sunday
by •
The Toronto Marathon (and Half Marthon) will be run on Sunday, May 6, 2012. It involves some 15,000 runners and can be counted on to make Sunday morning and perhaps some of the afternoon a driving mess. Linked below, courtesy of CITY is a list of road closures, which as you can see is very complex. Still, the marathon will not come through South Bayview although we will feel the impact. Whole Foods to open at 1860 Bayview site
by •
It’s been announced that Whole Foods will open a store in the commercial development at Bayview Ave and Broadway Ave. Whole Foods is a large natural foods firm with a store in Hazelton Lanes. Scheduled for completion in conjunction with the rest of the development, the 4,600-square-metre store will be located at 1860 Bayview Ave., just north of Eglinton Avenue. The property, next door to Mount Hope Cemetery, was the former home of Brennan Pontiac. The Austin, Tex.,-based grocer has more than 300 locations worldwide, including seven Canadian stores, all of which are in Vancouver or the Greater Toronto Area. It was founded in 1980 to sell upscale natural and organic foods free of artificial ingredients and hydrogenated fats. It has been subject to criticism however when unsuspecting shoppers are unable to purchase favorite brand names like Coca Cola and Becel margarine. (#whole)
Spectre of a Walmart on Wicksteed Ave.
by •
The spectre of an 80 to 90,000 square foot Walmart store on Wicksteed Ave. has been raised in material published by Councillor Parker based on his discussion with the owners of SmartCentres. Link at johnparker.ca Mr Parker makes it clear that he does not know to whom the largest space in the so-called Wicksteed Salamander site will be leased. The operative words, as we read it in his remarks, are as follows: “What we do know for sure is that the largest building proposed for the project is 80,000 sq ft. (It could well turn out to be smaller if we manage the application strategically.) Meanwhile, as far as I know, the smallest store operated by the celebrated retailer from Bentonville Arkansas whose name starts with W is 90,000 sq ft” Mr. Parker goes on to state his opposition to big box retail in Leaside and gives a brief history of zoning concessions which encourage such businesses. Walmart will be facing competition in Canada from Target, which will open a store in the East York Town Centre in 2013.
