Feeding the hungry at the St. Cuthbert’s Fair

This gentleman allowed that cooking up these succulent hot doga and sausages made him hungry. But he resisted temptation and kept on cooking. Right, two sisters show us the food of which they are about to partake. Good job, ladies. All of this in the churchyard at St. Cuthbert’s Spring Fair and Sale.

Dear Ashley Madison: Buy an Ad

It’s a journalistic embarrassment how an operation as sleazy and unimportant  as Ashley Madison.com gets editors to turn somersaults by sending a plain brown envelope of postal codes to the City Desk.  Would it be time to assign a reporter to check out the adulterous 400,000 person membership (wherever they reside) as genuine? Apparently not. Hey, adultery is adultery. So what if the ranks of those supposedly seeking afternoon quickies contains classes of giggling freshmen. No adultery in Leaside? Maybe that’s because most of the people there are really married. You still have to be married to commit this act, you know. Dear Ashley, buy an ad.  You belong in the back of NOW with the rest of the non-news sex advertisers.

Residents split down the middle over parking

Heaven

South Bayviewites may be extra happy they live in a neighborhood with reasonable parking in light of the nasty dispute that has pitted one side of Macpherson Ave against the other. The sharp north-south division surfaced during the first of two neighbourhood meetings regarding eliminating the fair-minded policy of alternate street parking on Macpherson. About 30 people turned out at Belmont House on Wednesday night to hear well-organized people from the north side make their case to put all the parking permanently on the south. What you say? Why?  Apparently the north-siders have been conspiring away for months to get rid of the cars in front of their houses. They were able, in fact, to generate the staff report that says moving parking permanently to the south side of the street would create 10 more parking spaces. (It also says street cleaning would be more difficult.) Their demands were read by a youngish Yuppie, who is obviously the leader. While his presentation was forceful, it was not strong on logic. His statement did not explain how adding 10 spaces to Macpherson would solve probldem parking. Three City staff and Ward 27 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam were present. The City staffers distributed a map of the 5H parking area and disclosed that there are 347 spaces for permits and only 300 have been issued. The area includes Marlborough Place, Marlborough Avenue, Macpherson, Molson Street, both sides of Roxborough Ave. W., Gibson Avenue, Ramsden Park Road and Pears Avenue. The south side residents have asked for time to answer this surprise attack. With files from Yonge and Roxborough News

Hockey dreams writ large in Markham

Markham Town Council has approved a financial partnership which will include multi-millionaire Rudy Bratty,  Graham Roustan of Bauer Sports and the Town to build a 20,000 seat arena near Highway 407 and Kennedy Rd.  Council voted 11-2 last night to borrow $162.5-million over 20 years. (That would buy an extra ice pad or two for Leaside Arena). Roustan and Bratty’s group is putting up the other half and Markham will own the arena.  Everyone is turning the sound down on an NHL franchise for Markham. How could the NHL do that after stonewalling Hamilton for decades?  But the sovereign NHL does whatever it likes.

Gimme a Green Clean Frappuccino

Workman paints outside of the Starbucks at Bayivew and Belsize Drive today as the coffee shop’s makeover goes on.  There is much work underway inside. Starbucks closed Monday and is expected to be open in a week. The plan is to refurbish Starbucks with new appointments and lighting. The baristas were suggesting that  customers could find their way to either of two new Starbucks, Mt Pleasant and Soudan, or Eglinton Ave at Laird Drive. Some may find that inconvenient and it appears that much business has gravitated to the Second Cup run by Hong Ngo just up the street. .
