As Ontario enters Step 3 of its re-opening plan, some changes have come to light on South Bayview. It appears as though we’ve hit the end of an era with Pat’s Barber Shop (708 Millwood Rd) in the dark today. Over at the former home of Banana Nail Boutique (or, F5 before them), a building permit suggests that an ice cream shop may be moving in. Yum yum. We are pleased to see that there is construction activity up at 1620 Bayview, the former home of Two Dogs Sports Bar. The building permit mentions a “new restaurant”. Meanwhile, have a look below to take a tour of McSorley’s newly renovated & pandemic retrofitted space, complete with plexiglass dividers at one of Bayview’s favourite bars. Bayview Leaside BIA’s social media will keep you up-to-date with more Bayview business news.

Boston Dynamics is teaching robot dog “Spot” new tricks
by
•It can find and pick up objects, tidy up the living room, open doors, operate switches and valves, tend the garden, and of course, it can dance. With the new arm extension, three Spots can get together for a bit of jump rope. Boston Dynamics sells its lifelike robots to warehouses, police, utilities, laboratories and factories to perform tasks better and more safely than humans can. In the summer of 2020, Spot was available for pre-order for a mere US$74,500.00. This Bulldog may feel a bit uneasy at the sight of one of these strolling down Bayview with Rover!

1951 Yonge Development Community Consultation Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at 6:30 PM
SERRA has encouraged participation in the Community consulation meeting for 1951 Yonge Street. Their recent mailer outlines their concerns with this development, as outlined below.
The application was previously submitted as a two tower development of 35 and 25 storeys, the proposal has now been resubmitted at 30 and 45 storeys! No green or open spaces proposed and with more than 800 units, bringing an additional 1,400 residents to the area.
This application adds to Davisville area development applications for 30 Merton, 140 Merton, 276 Merton, 22 Balliol, 155 Balliol, 185 Balliol, 265 Balliol, 141 Davisville (and we are afraid with more to come). As a result, we project Davisville population to grow from 9,000 residents (2016 Canada Census) to 17,000 residents.
The developer, The Times Group, claims the greater density is permitted because the province more than doubled the height allowance for this block (from the city’s recommendation) to between 30 and 45 storeys and because the development is next to the Davisville subway.
This application was already appealed earlier by the developer to the LPAT. The city, TDSB and SERRA are registered as parties to oppose at the LPAT.
This meeting is to obtain YOUR input about this application, then for City Planning to finalize their position on this project, and then for City Council to provide instructions to the city solicitor on how to oppose at the LPAT.
How can you provide input? Please attend the Community Consultation meeting for 1951 Yonge Street to learn more. Please ask the city planner on this file and hosting this meeting to review the Mount Pleasant report and consider issuing a similarly strong objection report.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at serra@southeglinton.ca

Burj Khalifa dazzled Dubai, Toronto’s CN Tower goes virtual
by
•The City of Toronto will collaborate with the CN Tower and CHUM1045 to host tonight’s New Year’s Eve display online. Based on the recommendations of Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Toronto, like other municipalities across Canada, is celebrating New Year’s Eve virtually. All in-person New Year’s Eve events, including celebrations in Nathan Phillips Square, have been cancelled.
The CN Tower light show will be live-streamed on the City’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/thecityoftoronto and simulcast on Jamar’s House Party live on CHUM1045 on December 31 starting at 11:58 p.m. Microprocessor-controlled, each of the CN Tower’s more than 1,300 LED lights can produce 16.7 million colours and an infinite variety of lighting effects. Synched to music, the show will ring in a brighter year ahead.
Another tall tower half way around the globe has already welcomed 2021 with a dazzling light show and fireworks display. Emaar Properties collaborated with Zoom to host its New Year’s Eve celebrations live from Downtown Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Up to 50,000 people from around the world were invited to tune-in to the global Zoom video call, while thousands watched in person.

Headlining the special are Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies, Loud Luxury and The Halluci Nation.

•Collapsed construction crane near Eglinton & Mt. Pleasant
by
•A mobile crane used to move lighting for night work on the Eglinton LRT collapsed Monday evening when the ground under it was eroded by water, workers on the scene reported. One man closely involved in the incident said the crane operator was aware of the erosion and was making “one last move” of a light standard as the crane toppled over. This source, who identified himself as an apprentice crane operator, told The South Bayview Bulldog that he and the operator leaped clear of the crane as it fell over. He said no one had been injured in the incident although police reports spoke of one person with injuries.
