Montreal Cabbie runs over two men when they don’t pay

There’s a terrible lesson here. Two young men, 20 and 18, leaped out of a Montreal taxi early Monday and walked off without paying. The cabbie was so incensed he drove up onto the sidewalk and ran over the two. The younger man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, though his condition stabilized overnight. The other man suffered less serious injuries.

The stories about Uber ride sharing (taxi service) continue to unfold. It is the surprise charges that seem to be so unsurprising when it comes to Uber. In Chicago a woman was told her dog has soiled the taxi. She says the dog was in its carrier at all times. As proof, Uber sent her pictures of two different car interiors. She claims she does not recognize either one.
Swimming pool sunscreen sign taken down at Wadlow Park

The City has removed a sign at the Kiwanis Pool in Stan Wadlow Park on Cedarvale Ave. which asked swimmers to remove sunscreen before entering the pool. The instructions caused some parents to complain. Kiwanis staff had created the handwritten sign and explained that sunscreen leaves an oily film on the water which can make it difficult for lifeguards to see the bottom of the pool. They also said the sunscreen requires them to use more chlorine to purify the water, according to Richard Labonte, a Kiwanis Pool staff member. A City recreation department spokesperson Aydin Sarrafzaden said the sign was a well-intentioned attempt to encourage swimmers to shower prior to entering the pool, but could have been misinterpreted. She said the City regretted any concerns that the sign may have caused.

The Civic Holiday weather looks better than expected although there may be surprise thunderstorms. The Weather Network is calling for partly cloudy skies and a high of 27. A look below at the pea-sized hail that fell in parts of Southern Ontario yesterday. This is in Waterloo.
Teen drowns at Kincardine Beach on Lake Huron

A teen boy is said to have drowned in Lake Huron at Kincardine’s Station Beach Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of people watched as emergency personnel tried to locate the teen who disappeared under the water shortly before 3 p.m. The boy, reported to be 16, has not been identified nor a hometown given. Local reports say his friends reported that the boy was swimming when the waves picked up before the thunderstorms rolled into the region. As of Monday (August 3, 2015) no update on the search had been released. The teen is described at 5’ tall, with dark shaggy hair, wearing a black bathing suit.

Here are four of the fairly fit New York laddermen who grace the 2016 NYFD calendar. The New York Fire Department which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. So far as we can tell, next year’s Toronto Fire Service calendar isn’t out yet. But in every case, these galleries help support very good causes. The NYFD calendar is $16 U.S. and money goes to the fire department foundation which gives to a variety of charities.
So close: Leaside Team Red in valiant final inning effort

Leaside Team Red were runners-up at the Lou Gehrig Iron Horse Tournament in Buffalo with the final game a true heartbreaker. They had won four games to face Victor NY for the championship. They were, as Mark Vendramini reports, one inch from total victory. They had won the semi in what Mark calls a “13-12 walk off.” In a final game of six innings, Team Red was tied when Victor NY scored one in the sixth. Leaside had the tying run on third, and the winning run on second with two out but could not push them across. Final was 9-8. It was a worthy game effort and a tournament showing to make Leaside proud. To get to the finals Team Red beat Victor Emmett 11-0, Grand Island 18-1, Cayuga 9-5. Thanks guys.
Rain tonight, rocky weather Monday as heat backs off

The Veld electronic music concert in Downsview Park was cancelled Sunday night in the face of high winds and forecast conditions which may have sounded worse than they were. But the fans were sure to get very wet regardless of wind. Severe thunderstorm warnings have been downgraded to a weather watch for Toronto and surrounding area. There were some downed trees and Hydro reports about 1000 customers without power. Across Southern Ontario the number is much higher.

General Election will change how South Bayview votes

The arrival of the election campaign of 2015 announced Sunday (August 2 2015) also officially puts in place the altered electoral boundaries drawn in 2013. In South Bayview, changes to Toronto Centre, Don Valley West and St. Paul’s will be noticeable. The top half of Toronto Centre has been lopped off and joined in a riding known as University-Rosedale. It stretches across the centre of the City from Moore Park to Ossington Ave. It lumps in the University of Toronto, Queen’s Park and Chinatown. The western boundary of Don Valley West now sits to the west on Mt. Pleasant Rd. This brings to an end a historic boundary in Bayview Ave which is now submerged in Don Valley West. The change shifts the residents of a large part of Davisville Village from the former St. Paul’s to the expanded Don Valley West. It leaves residents between Mt. Pleasant and Bayview represented not by Carolyn Bennett but by John Carmichael. Let the games begin. All Ontario electoral maps
