He robs banks and then slips away on a subway train

Whoever he is, he is now worth $10,000 to any co-worker, relative or friend who knows the Tunnel Rat Bank Robber. Cops say the man has hit eight banks between Tuesday, January 6, 2015 and Wednesday, March 11, 2015.  That’s one every eleven or twelve days. But wait, it seems the rat is taking a vacation or “gone straight” as they used to say. Well, it doesn’t matter because today (Wednesday, May 13, 2015) the Canadian Bankers Association and Toronto Police Service Hold-up announced the fat reward. And as police said, the case and the reward won’t go away. “Relationships fray,” one policeman said. Someone may be ready to talk, and mark a big payday.  In each of the holdups he wore the baseball cap guise seen above and passed a typed note to the teller. He indicated he was armed. Then he fled into the subway. The man is described as white, 5’9″ – 6′, 30s, narrow nose, and dark hair.

A fixed camera shows the sheerest glimpse of the ill-fated Amtrak train flashing towards the sharp curve where it crashed. Arcing lights reveal the violent end of the train’s trip in a catastrophic accident. Evidence shows it was travelling twice the set speed for this curve which can be seen quite well in the daytime video later in the above video. Reuters

MLSE bans season ticket holders for foul-mouthed antics

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment says it will enforce an indefinite ban on four men in the wake of an incident on Sunday outside of BMO Field with CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt. MLSE  owns and operates the Toronto FC, Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors, It said the men are facing a ban of no less than one year. MLSE says they have identified two of the men as Toronto FC season ticket-holders. Reporter deserves credit for calling obscencity jerks

Reporter deserves thanks for calling out the obscenity jerks

The CBC interview seen in the video below is addressing the practice of young men shouting obscenities at women broadcast reporters as a form of fun, apparently. One of the obscene phrases begins with F (no, really?) but it absolutely does not matter because any filthy language would surely do, one supposes.
The issue was turned into news by CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt who confronted these jackasses and, most critically, recorded them for publication on YouTube. Society owes Ms. Hunt a debit of gratitude for this. As to the CBC interview, what is useful is the reaction of the perps and their defenders.
The news pay dirt here is in the indignant comments posted by those who think that such behavior is an important part of Western Civilization. Commentator MetalAsFork tells the CBC reporter to remember there are reporters working in war zones.
This sloppy logic will leave most people smiling at MetalAsFork’s heavily- defended right to boorishness. But it’s a tip off to deeply-bunkered anger that likes to turn common civility upside down. It’s okay they say to humiliate and insult everyone in sight (because after all, it offends men too)  It’s their right, they claim. Well, not so much. Employers and others who can make constructive change here should act in whatever way they can to crack the defenses of these obscenity cultists and bring them to their senses

Tributes to Leaside teacher Dave Stickney on Chit Chat

The community Facebook page Leaside Chit Chat has many remembrances of David Stickney, the Leaside High School mathematics teacher who died this week. There is also a Facebook Tribute Page to the late teacher.

Mr. Stickney died while watching a softball game played by a girl’s club that he helped coach. On Chit Chat, Janet Ahier recalled many good times in the Spring at “Stickney Farm.”

Steve White noted the outpouring of sympathy. There were more than 100 comments logged in only three hours. Good friend Nicholas Mitchell recalled that “Stick” was not just a Leaside student and football player but also the school captain. “He played centre on the football team and his nickname was Tank, Mr. Mitchell said.

Arthur (Alfie) Peneycad recalled Mr. Stickney from the 1950s when they were neighbours on Cameron Crescent. He wrote: “We played street hockey and football together. David started teaching in Oshawa. He once told me that he got his teaching style from his old Leaside math teacher “Pop Stafford”.

Dave was the one that mentored me and got me through algebra, trigonometry and geometry (1965). Everyone knew Dave. He had a nickname for everyone. David and I spent Spring Break together with Jack Hardy and John Noseworthy in Daytona Beach. Dave was the Master of Ceremonies at my wedding.

Shocking report: New TTC trams built “out of alignment”

The Toronto Star says that many of the first streetcars delivered as part of a $1.25 billion order were so poorly manufactured that the TTC refused to accept them. Only five of 50 are now in service. The condition of the cars, as described by TTC spokesperson Brad Ross, is genuinely shocking. The faulty cars had frames that were out alignment with the walls. “Thunder Bay (Bombardier factory) was finding when they went to attach the under-frame to the side walls they weren’t square. You either accept that or try riveting it to create that square alignment. We rejected that. We don’t want it riveted. We want it built properly, because rivets pop,” TTC CEO Andy Byford told the Star. According to the Star, most of the early problems with the streetcars related to the fact that the European-design for the vehicles wasn’t working with the parts being supplied to Bombardier by a Mexican manufacturing facility. Bombardier must still deliver a further 30 streetcars.

Overlea hope? Lowes will tell where it is locating June 30

Lowes Canada has replied to the South Bayview Bulldog that readers should “stay tuned” for information about where it will locate new outlets in Toronto. The home renovation and housewares firm has taken 13 former Target locations across Canada. This news caused speculation that Lowes might be thinking of opening a Midtown Toronto outlet on Overlea Blvd in the vacant Target store in the East York Town Centre. . The reply from Lowes says only that it will be “sharing the locations on June 30 (2015) when the purchase transactions close.” Fair enough. We note they didn’t say no. .Will Lowes finds its way to the East York Town Centre
