BIA hosts Pixies at Sophie’s for all their service to Bayview

The Bayview Leaside BIA has hosted the Bayview Pixies for lunch at Sophie’s Kitchen this week. It’s entirely right because these selfless volunteer ladies see to the planting of flowers and shrubs as well as the care of the trees. They also add an element of neighborliness to any walk along the broad sidewalks of Bayview. But here’s an extra if one were needed. The pixie concept is appealing in and of itself well beyond our street. The Pixies are ambassadors to the media. Every BIA should be so fortunate. Lower left, please don’t spare the copper. A new home on secret Evergreen Gardens in Bennington Heights shines with its metal fixings. Down the right side, Apple Fest on Bayview is this weekend. You’ll want to drop by. There will be buskers, a chalk art contest, music, an Apple Fest raffle and specials. Below that, more Halloween Now. These planted pumpkins at Longo’s are not scary but rather nice. At bottom, check the transformation in the east side of Laird Drive at Commercial Rd. The demolition of DEL Inc. makes way for the expansion of Gyro Motors.  Please visit the South Bayview Bulldog Bulletin Board for more things happening this week.

Sophie’s Kitchen is popular, Harvest Fair is September 22

At left is Bayview restaurateur Hayley Edwards. She and her partner Robbie Sabato are owners of Sophie’s Kitchen, the bright and popular breakfast and lunch place at 1614 Bayview. Sophie’s is named after little Sophie, age two-and-a-half. Nice. More on Sophie’s soon at The Bulldog. At upper right, merchants of the Mt. Pleasant Village BIA will have their annual Harvest Fair September 22. It’s always fun. Centre left, the blog prepared by the Bayview Leaside BIA notes some new merchants including Alice’s Art Studio at 1725 Bayview in the long-time home of Newsome Photography. Welcome Alice. Below that, the fenced off property at Davisville Public School on Millwood Rd. augurs the early arrival of the wreckers. The old DPS will give way to a modern, three-storey school with many amenities for area children. Centre right. a reminder of the Bayview Leaside BIA annual Apple Fest set for September 29 and 30. There will be buskers. Sounds like fun. At the bottom, the Rotary Club Corn Roast and Dog Show is this Sunday at Trace Manes. Looking forward. Finally, witch to do you prefer? You can have Halloween now if you visit the Home Depot on Wicksteed. Hear this happy hag cackle here.

Sophie’s bright kitchen near opening at 1614 Bayview Ave.

It’s reported that Sophie’s (kitchen) will open Wednesday. Charming photos on an Instagram account show a bright and homey-looking restaurant. The owners are said to be from Leaside. It seems diner rules will apply with emphasis on breakfast and lunch (shades of Rosie’s). One photo of a gentleman working at the stove is captioned “think Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Braised Steak Sandwich and Freshly Squeezed Charcoal Lemonade.” There is also said to be a dish called “Eggs Bennington” and a “Bayview BLT” (ha ha). Welcome to South Bayview.

Bayview BIA Sidewalk Sensation heading our way Saturday

Saturday will see an exciting time on our favorite street as the Bayview Leaside BIA merchants offer their very best and a lot of extras too. The street map at the top of the gallery locates entertainment for kids — bouncy castle, face painting, photo contest, balloon stand and snow cones. Check the Facebook page for what merchants are planning. Top centre, what a great picture of Eric Stickney with Leaside High School scholars Ethan Rajaratnam and Jane Eckler at the school’s convocation late in June. Ethan and Jane were honoured with the David Stickney Award presented to graduating students who meet the criteria of high proficiency in math, participation in team athletics and giving back to the community through volunteering. The award is named after Eric’s late dad, a much loved teacher at LHS. Top right is a reminder that the Thorncliffe Park Neighbors Night Out is Saturday. Lower left, this is Tuesday and the East York Farmer’s Market is underway until 2 p.m. at 850 Coxwell Ave. Lower right, the heritage Capitol Theatre at Yonge St. and Castlefield Ave. is part of a proposal to redevelop the corner. The developer, Madison Group, wants to retain the facade of the 1918 movie house.

Bayview’s new banners encourage shoppers to “Get It On”

The new banners lining South Bayview, installed by the Bayview Leaside BIA, are encouraging shoppers to “Get It On”.  We can’t help think about what T. Rex once said, “Get it on, bang the gong, get it ooooon…”  On another note, don’t forget the street’s Sidewalk Sensation event is coming up next month. Bayview Avenue, between Davisville and Soudan, will be host to live music and family entertainment from 10am-5pm on July 14th, 2018.

Starbucks on Bayview closed briefly for renovations

Starbucks at 1545 Bayview Avenue has closed their doors for a few days to perform some renovations.  They’ll be closed from May 14th – 16th, 2018.  Looking forward to seeing the “new look”!

Rashida covers Bayview BIA Sweep for Toronto Observer

Public-spirited friends of Bayview Ave. gathered Saturday to sweep up winter left-overs at the annual Bayview Leaside BIA Sweep the Streets Clean Up. The community of interest shared by east and west banks of the  Don River was on display as Rashida Powankumar (above) a reporter for the Toronto Observer came to write about the event. The Observer is published by the Centennial College School of Journalism from its “intimate boutique campus” at Carlaw and Mortimer Aves. Rashida echoes the sentiments of many who practice the craft. “I love what I do. I really enjoy it. Every day it’s something new and I love that,” Rashida said

New art arrivals to see on Bayview Sweep the Street Day

Upper left, recent arrivals at State of the Art at 1541 Bayview Ave. include pieces by Sacha Barrette. Sacha has been in residence in Colliure, in the south of France for the last four months. Drop in and take a look at his beautifully bright colorful paintings. To the right and below that, the East York Skating Club Show continues at the East York Memorial Gardens at 888 Cosburn Ave. Centre, this is Sweep the Street Day on Bayview Ave. Join the gang with your broom at the corner of Bayview and Millwood and help the Bayview Leaside BIA keep our favorite business street looking great. At the bottom, there are many other local events including the Rotary Recycling intake at East York Town Centre. They’re there until 4 p.m. And if you have an old bike, get it over to the playground behind Davisville Public School before 2pm. Finally, a reminder that the Don Valley Parkway is closed this weekend. The South Bayview Bulletin Board

Bitcoin kiosk installed at Bayview Ave. and Fleming Cres.

The firm Crypto Fast is tweeting that it has installed a bitcoin machine at Bayview Jug Milk at Bayview Ave. and Fleming Crescent. Crypto Fast uses the term ATM, as many do, but others say they are correctly called merely kiosks because they do not function like bank ATMs. This Wikipedia article is useful in educating yourself about how such machines are used, and the caution that should be employed. Among other things, it deals with the murky world of money muling. Bitcoin kiosks have also been used as a tool by phone scammers to induce victims to send money that is untraceable by the authorities. Oh yes, you can buy a bitcoin today for $10,173.98 Canadian, if you have that lying around.

Bayview Leaside BIA wins award for “green” Apple Fest

Congratulations to the Bayview Leaside BIA and the tireless Bayview Pixies for winning the top prize for this year’s Apple Fest, in honour of their “green” event decor. Judges found the October 2017 Apple Fest street dressing of South Bayview one of the best in the City. The award was given by the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA) and recognizes decorative and recyclable decorations. Above left we see (from left) BIA representatives Kris Morra, Warren Ravinthirarajah and Debora Kuchme (leader of the Pixies) with Darryl Kaplan, President of the TABIA Board of Directors. Then to the right, Leaside men chow down at the Leaside Pub on Laird Drive at Thursday’s 14th Annual Leaside Guys Night Out. This selfless effort raises money to buy a gift for every single school child in Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park. God’s work gentlemen. Lower left is the Bayview Leaside BIA Santa and he’s a good one. You can visit him this weekend. To  the lower right, a look at the Beaches boardwalk brightly lighted thanks to the public-spirited contribution of  DeClute Real Estate. Below that, a reminder of the December-long holiday pop-up shop at Bamboo Bay private art school at Bayview and Millwood Rd. Pop up and take a look. Below, is the updated South Bayview bulletin board with events happening tonight and this weekend.
