Bayview chronicles: New beginnings, milestones & farewells

In the ever-changing landscape of Bayview Avenue, recent developments have both delighted and saddened the community.

On October 14th, Suzan Galluzzo Nutrition & Wellness celebrated the grand opening of her new Toronto location at 465 Manor Road East. Mystery solved up at 1685 Bayview, where a soon-to-arrive medical center and pharmacy have been officially announced on big signs in their windows. Adding to our tapestry of options, Dotty, a boutique specializing in “pretty clothes for real life,” recently opened its doors at 469 Manor Rd E., Suite 202. Drink Juice Co. celebrated eight fruitful years on October 14th, with an anniversary sale and vibrant customer appreciation party, transforming its patio into a hub of festivity. However, there is a touch of sadness to report, as the Bad Blowfish Cafe at 1595 Bayview Ave has closed its doors. Their cafe is now up for lease.

Photis Philos, formerly of Bell Jewellers, has passed away

Photis was a large presence spanning multiple decades on Bayview Avenue at the helm of Bell Jewellers earning him the nickname “Mayor of Bayview”. We fondly remember the lively chats we shared while buying a new timepiece, getting watch batteries replaced, or pricing out jewellery repairs.

Photis’ funeral will be held on September 5, 2023. Visit the Mount Pleasant Group website for obituary, funeral details, and to sign the Guestbook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Toronto Leaside Rotary Foundation (Toronto Leaside Rotary Foundation and sent to: c/o Mr. Bill Fitz, 112 Reeve Drive, Markham ON L3P 6C7), Canadian Cancer Society or New Visions Toronto.

Bayview Biz: A grand opening, a closure, and a new tenant

Jing Chinese Restaurant is celebrating its grand opening with limited time specials being offered at 1634 Bayview Ave. Unfortunately, Hindusthali at 1574 Bayview Ave has closed its doors. Meanwhile, the premises at 1673 Bayview Ave, formerly Nicee Premium Dry Cleaning, has found a new tenant, leaving us curious about the upcoming addition to the area’s business landscape.

Bayview Biz: New openings, new menus and new mysteries

Exciting developments are brewing in our favourite business district.

Bad Blowfish Cafe (1595 Bayview Ave) has elevated its culinary game with the addition of an in-house chef. They are introducing a range of dishes for breakfast, lunch, and (new!) dinner. Extended hours means that they are now welcoming patrons till 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. At 1543 Bayview Ave, RIMINI De La Mer Authentic Italian Fish Market is now open! They will bring a taste of Italy to seafood enthusiasts, serving up fresh and authentic catches.

Mysteries add an air of excitement to the street, particularly at 1597-1599 Bayview Ave. Workers have been busy altering the entryway, leaving the neighbourhood curious about whether this pertains to the anticipated Turkish Restaurant or something entirely different. A recent sign (now removed) indicated that Apex Property Management had secured the property on behalf of the mortgagee.

The space at 1609 Bayview Ave has been leased, but details about the new occupants remain a mystery. Residents are eagerly speculating about who might be moving in, do you have a tip? Yerba Buena bid farewell to its location at 1669 Bayview Ave, passing the torch to Hemisphere Cannabis Co, who now occupy the space. We have heard whispers of a golf simulation facility setting up shop on Bayview. We will try to dig up more information about this one soon. 😉

The Bayview culinary scene is thriving, with Jing Chinese Restaurant soon to open its doors at 1634 Bayview Ave. (formerly California Roll). A reminder that the grand opening specials at Jyugoya Japanese Restaurant (1528 Bayview Avenue), a delectable journey into Japanese cuisine, are continuing until August 7th.

And finally we couldn’t help but notice that the flowers on Bayview are in full bloom, and in some cases, reaching new heights! Take a leisurely stroll, savour local delights and enjoy the beautiful patios before the summer is over. Bayview Avenue is the place to be this season!

Bayview Biz: Jyugoya Japanese Restaurant is now open!

Grand opening is Wednesday, July 26th, 2023!

OUTFRONT removed rooftop billboard sign Wednesday

On Wednesday, a large crane dominated the skyline at 1573 Bayview Avenue as OUTFRONT Media took down their rooftop billboard sign. The towering crane attracted attention as the company worked diligently to remove the prominent advertisement from the site.

Uncertainty surrounds future of Turkish resto on Bayview

A highly anticipated Turkish restaurant planned for Bayview Avenue may face an uncertain future. A sign recently appeared in the windows of 1597-1599 Bayview Avenue, leaving doubts about the establishment’s fate. Last year, the windows displayed images of a swanky design, hinting at Rumi Turkish Cuisine. The prospect of an upscale eatery offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, a bar, and live music seemed exciting.

However, a sign now posted in the windows states that the property has been secured by Apex Property Management on behalf of the mortgagee, and entry is prohibited without permission. The exact implications for Rumi Turkish Cuisine remain unclear.

Previously, 1597 and 1599 Bayview Avenue housed Butter Studio and Scholar’s Choice.

OPENING SOON: RIMINI De La Mer Italian Fish Market

A new fish business is poised to open on Bayview following the recent closure of De La Mer Fresh Fish Market. According to the new sign posted in the window, RIMINI De La Mer Authentic Italian Fish Market is set to open soon at 1543 Bayview Avenue.

De La Mer, was a local fish market with 4 Toronto locations, known for quality, service, and sustainability, and recently made the difficult decision to close permanently due to the owner’s battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.
