‘The Beat Goes On’ at Manor Road United – April 20th

Get ready for Manor Road United‘s “The Beat Goes On” concert. The night will feature John McDermott and special guest Liberty Silver, along with performances by Clinton & Judy, Douglas Tranquada, Glen Sevillo, John Joseph Mastandrea, Stagecoach Performing Arts, Jason Fowler & Melanie Conly, Steve Diguer, Tom Marcaccini & The Cornerstone Band, and more. Beltline Gap Connections – Have Your Say!

The City of Toronto is inviting residents to learn more and provide feedback on the Beltline Gap Connections project.

The project proposes a safe and connected route for pedestrians and cyclists over the Allen Road Expressway closing the gap between the York Beltline Trail and Kay Gardner Beltline Trail.

The proposed road safety improvements and bikeway connections will be installed at the same time as upcoming scheduled state of good repair road work to reduce disruption.

Leaside Garden Society’s $2000 scholarship opportunity

The Leaside Garden Society is offering a $2,000 scholarship in 2024 for a student enrolled in a post-secondary institution (second year or beyond) studying horticulture or a related subject such as botany, ecology, environmental science, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture, or plant science.

The Leaside Garden Society Founders’ Scholarship was established to honour the initiative of those who in the 1980’s had the foresight and energy to form the Leaside Garden Society.

Susan Scandiffio wins 2024 Agnes Macphail Award

Agnes Campbell Macphail (1890-1954) was once described as “the most important woman in public life that Canada has produced in the 20th century.”

The Agnes Macphail Award is an annual award that recognizes an individual(s) from the East York community who has exemplified the causes that Agnes Macphail championed in her long and distinguished career.

The recipient of the 2024 Agnes Macphail Award is Susan Scandiffio.

Susan is a passionate and driven community leader, actively supporting issues that were important to Agnes Macphail.

Having helped to establish the Thorncliffe Food Collaborative serving over 2,000 in Thorncliffe and Flemingdon Park, she continues to collect food and toiletry donations, and rallying community and corporate support. She volunteered with the Out of the Cold Program and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, helping individuals facing homelessness and food insecurity.

She was instrumental in raising over $400,000 in toys and in-kind support for the Leaside Community Toy Drive which provides Christmas gifts to over 6,000 children in the Flemingdon and Thorncliffe Park neighbourhoods, and helped raise over $1 million to renovate a local playground.

She rallied a neighbourhood team to support the Fill a Purse for a Sister Campaign, donating necessity-filled purses to social service agencies supporting women, and has worked over the past 11 years with a team of women collecting thousands of dollars for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Susan is co-Chair of the Metrolinx Impact Committee, established to secure community benefits around the Metrolinx train yard project, and she is also a contributing writer to the community publication Leaside Life, providing local news to the community.The Agnes Macphail Award, Toronto.ca

Pamela and Elke will delve into bulb varieties often perceived as challenging, offering insights into their cultivation. March Break crafts and workshops at Todmorden Mills

Todmorden Mills invites you to participate in their March Break programming from March 8 to March 17. Dive into a variety of family-friendly activities offering a mix of crafts, workshops, and historical exploration that will celebrate women’s stories and history.

Crafts and Workshops for Everyone

Enjoy creating crafts such as 3-D paper birds, clothespin frogs, paper flower bouquets, pop-up cards, watercolour painting workshop of local flora and fauna and papermaking workshop inspired by the work of influential figures such as Alice Eastwood, Jean Lumb, and Elizabeth Simcoe. Sample treats made from historic recipes, take a self-guided nature walk in the Wildflower Preserve, and join a guided tour of historic homes to learn more about the impact women have made in Toronto’s history.
