Bayview BIA will know its name in the New Year

The long-awaited results of the BIA vote will bring much curiosity as to what it should be named. Josh Matlow (Ward 22) who broke the news of the vote result on Twitter, has long favoured the name South Bayview BIA. That was the choice of The South Bayview Bulldog as well as nearly 80 percent of the people who voted in a Bulldog poll in August. The decision might seem almost automatic except that last summer former Councillor Parker suggested that the name Bayview Leaside should be used. A vote among the five members of the steering committee brought a split in favour of the Leaside name. Mssrs. Matlow and Parker were somewhat at odds until they reached a working compromise at City Council in August to get the voting process moving. The new BIA was left simply unnamed. Mr. Matlow has been a strong voice in favour of a name which is inclusive of those living on both sides of the street. As residents will know, Leaside sits to the east, Davisville Village to the west. Also, South Bayview has a long history and considerable name-recognition throughout the area. In a tweeted reply to area political gadfly and naturalist Rudy Limeback, Mr. Matlow said the new name will be chosen in the New Year. In a tweet late today he added that the decision will be made at the first Annual General Meeting of the BIA and that he will be present to speak for Ward 22 residents.

Agnes Macphail Award nominations are open

Agnes Macphail

The East York Foundation has announced that nominations for the 2015 Agnes Macphail Award are open and that the deadline for nominations is Thursday, January 29, 2015. The annual award is open to citizens of the former Borough East York (see below) and is given in commemoration of the ideals of Ms Macphail, who was for many years a resident of Leaside. Agnes Macphail was elected Canada’s first woman Member of Parliament on this date in 1921 and had an active and distinguished career both as an MP and later as MPP for East York. She was a notable progressive and ardent pacifist even though she concluded that it was necessary to fight the aggression of Hitler’s Nazi regime.  The ideals embodied in the award are those of social justice and outstanding contribution to community life in areas such as women’s rights, fairness to seniors and youth. Other standards are criminal justice system and penal reform, international peace and disarmament, access to adequate housing, access to adequate health care or access to adequate education. The former Borough of East York includes East York, Leaside, Thorncliffe Park, Governor’s Bridge, and Bennington Heights. The nomination form and more detailed information about the event are found at this web site link.  The donation form is also at the web site. All funds collected for the 2015 Agnes Macphail Award will be donated to a charity chosen by the 2015 award recipient. Tax receipts are issued by the East York Foundation. Dawn Librach’s Rewind opens on Mt. Pleasant

A smart new shop specializing in re-purchased clothing has opened at 598 Mt. Pleasant Rd just north of Penrose Rd. Rewind is the concept of owner Dawn Librach (seen above on the right with a customer). Dawn is proud of her method of acquisition and handling of all clothing, including shoes and other accessories. “We buy the goods outright from sources all over the U.S. and Canada. There’s no consignment so we are able to sell at a better price.”  Inventory may range across many decades, she says. Dawn is a Bachelor of Commerce graduate from Ryerson University, where she learned her interest in retailing. Her business is fully-described as Rewind: couture revisited/vintage resale.

414 Manor Rd. near Cleveland up for $2,150,000

The transformation of Manor Rd. and other South Bayview residential streets is steaming forward. It’s okay, we suppose that those little brick bungalows like 414 Manor are vanishing but the places that replace them are priced over the moon. Inset are the pictures of the home in question. At top, the place as it sits for sale this season listed at $2,159,000 by Fari Madani, Re/Max Infinite Inc. Thanks to Toronto Life for that.  Below, the bungalow that was, photographed in 2011 by Google Streetscape. The new place is described by Toronto Life as an ultra-modern, grey-brick home with an enormous fireplace in the living room. It has a second-floor laundry room, Nest thermostats, exterior cameras, radiant heating in the bathrooms and basement and an under-the-stairs wine cellar. It has the garage at ground level, an architectural feature that is being questioned by some. The place sits near Cleveland midway between Gresham and Cheston Rds. on the north side Take a look
