Leaside twins win first prize for well-groomed chickens

hen Andrew and Matthew Patel of South Leaside were just kids they were frequently under the motherly eye of Marjorie Noakes, a neighbor across the street. Neither of the twins could quite manage Mrs. Noakes three syllable first name so they shortened it up to Muffy. She liked that. Mrs. Noakes is now a bright 91 years old and was delighted to be with Andrew and Matthew again at the Royal Winter Fair this month. It was here that the boys were showing their carefully groomed and coddled family of 14 urban chickens, a rooster and two geese. To their amazement, they picked up dozens of wins including two first-place finishes and a best-in-class. Mrs. Noakes was tickled to find that one of the chickens was named Muffy, a tribute to her. The inset picture is a charming piece of family history on all sides.

Entertaining account by Vanessa Lu

Some readers may have seen the entertaining account written by Vanessa Lu in the Toronto Star in recent days. She describes the meticulous washing and grooming routine that Andrew and Matthew pursued to get their birds ready. A fancy china cup from their mother’s collection was sneaked off to create a vinegar rinse, Lu reports. The Patel family’s road to urban chicken farming is said to have had various origins. The childhood farm of the twins grandmother in Slovenia was an inspiration. Locally a few visits to the Royal had created a fascination for the poultry competition. The boys will finish up Grade 12 at Upper Canada College next Spring and be off to university next year. This fall it was now or never for a go at entering the competition. Vanessa Lu, Toronto Star

Roads slippery around South Bayview at nightfall

Motorists locally were taking it slow along South Bayview streets tonight as the salt trucks had yet to arrive in Davisville, Moore Park or Leaside. At sundown (4.48 p.m.) it was quite slippery on Moore Ave. elsewhere no doubt. Environment Canada has issued a snow statement predicting five centimetres this evening and overnight. Much of New York State was blanketed in more than five feet of snow this week. Erie County, which includes the city of Buffalo, declared a state of emergency due to the huge amount of snow. It is known as the lake effect. Buffalo always get socked with snow for the same reason places like Owen Sound are frequently smothered. The eastward travelling weather speeds snow across the lakes and dumps it on the first land it finds. In the case of Lake Erie, that’s Buffalo. Toronto has much better luck. The western shore of Lake Ontario benefits from the higher terrain to the north which often blocks snow headed our way. Video of South Bayview on this snowy and cold night

Leaside Jr. Wildcats defeat Team China 3-0

Hard-fought exhibition play between the Leaside Junior Wildcats and Team China saw the local girls defeat the visitors 3 to 0 at Don Mills Arena Tuesday night. The International Women’s Hockey match was a useful experience for both teams. The Chinese Ice Hockey Association is taking the game seriously and was eager to have its team meet — – and learn from — a face off with a competitive Canadian squad. The first period was scoreless despite a Leaside penalty. In the second frame, the Wildcats capitalized on a Chinese penalty when Cynthia Cavanagh scored at 13.52. That goal was followed a few minutes later with another from Emma Pye. Katriona McNeilly got the last Leaside marker at 11.42 of the third period. There were some understandable teen nerves showing among the 15 to 17 years-olds. One Team China girl left her jersey behind at the hotel and had to borrow a red Leaside shirt from the home team. Sporting the name “Reid” on her back, she matched her teammates gear in colour only. Don Mills had its perimeter heaters going full blast but the evening was a chilly one even by the standard of the hockey arena. Many fans made good use of the Tim Horton’s inside the next-door Metro. Photo: Action in front of the China net. (The South Bayview Bulldog) Below, teams together by CDowdall via Twitter.

Stolen goods from South Bayview on police site

150-year-old Bible
Toronto Police have established a special website intended to reunite owners with their stolen goods. Many of the items were taken from homes in South Bayview’s 53 Division. There are thousands of pieces of property shown in some 4,000 photographs on the site. One of them is a 150-year old copy of the Bible. The website requires the public to register to gain access to the information and pictures. This summer police reported on arrests related to the recovery of stolen cars in an investigation known as Project Yellowbird. It appears that the items now being shown  are part of that operation. To register for the Project Yellowbird property identification program and view recovered property, click here.

NSS students asked to take a moment for safety

Parachute Canada is thanking Northern Secondary School students for participating this morning (Monday, November 17, 2014) in traffic safety awareness. A clever play on words asks kids to take a “Moment of Silence” before crossing the street. Meaning, make sure you are paying attention. This is especially true just outside NSS where the corner of Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Broadway Ave. can be pretty busy when school is over. Everybody is looking good but between the phones and each other the boys and girls are distracted from cars and trucks. Traffic can become an afterthought. So go safely guys. Twitter

Liquor license for Local Public Eatery on Laird

Notice has been given by the firm known as Local Public Eatery of Vancouver for the liquor license at its new location at 180 Laird Drive. That’s the old CIBC building with the nice parking lot on McRae Drive. The license calls for both inside and outside serving. A patio certainly means that the one-story addition at the rear of the building is intended to have outdoor tables overlooking McRae. There is really no other outside space. Previous post

Erica Stark (Bissinger) formerly of Leaside

The following notice is re-printed from the Toronto Star obituaries where it was published this morning (Thursday, November 13, 2014)  Erica Stark (nee Bissinger) was killed when she was struck by a minivan a week ago today.  Previous post.

ERICA STARK (nee BISSINGER) Aged 42, lifelong resident of Toronto. Much loved wife of David; mother of Dylan, Gavin and Matthew; daughter of Linda Bissinger and Ed Bissinger (Carol Stanley); sister of Sarah Bissinger (Craig Anderson); daughter-in-law of Jack Stark; sister-in-law of Andy Stark (Sylvia Proaño) and Laurie Stark; aunt of Lennox, Camilo and Evan; step-sister of Hilary McMahon (Colin) and Allan Stanley (Lynn Pacarynuk). Missed terribly by aunts, uncles, cousins and little ones on both sides. Taken from us suddenly, Erica lived life to its fullest: travelling the world with her family, teaching healthy living and empathy to her boys, inspiring others and being inspired and giving her time, love, enthusiasm and unstinting dedication to the Withrow community. Cozying up with good books, discussing them at her book clubs, fostering future dog guides, cooking, baking, snowshoeing, brisk walks, yoga, Zumba dancing classes and spending summers and work weekends at YMCA Geneva Park, we will remember Erica for these and other pursuits that reflect her strength and passion for life. Erica and David spent 22 wonderful years together and she adored every minute she had with their beautiful young boys–always mindful of their health, safety and well-being. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, YMCA Capital Campaign for Geneva Park or the Withrow Home and School Associationn Visitation will be held at Trull Funeral Home, 1111 Danforth Ave., on Monday, November 17, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held at Eastminster United Church, 310 Danforth Ave., on Tuesday, November 18 at 10:30 a.m. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.trullfuneralsdanforth.com

Liquor, wine and the future of South Bayview

The organizers of the yet to be formed Business Improvement Association on South Bayview have their work cut out for them. One looming problem is the likely disappearance of the LCBO store at 1524 Bayview at Millwood Road. Even when the easy-up, easy down plastic signs were being installed in 2013 (inset) workmen were laughing at how short this location was going to last. The LCBO is following its time-honoured policy of going to the malls, where parking is free, big stores kiss them and so do the landlords. In this case, it appears the Bayview LCBO will find its new home in what is being called the Whole Foods development at 1860 Bayview and Broadway Ave. The construction on the old Brennan’s Pontiac site is speeding along and Whole Foods is committed to a 2015 opening. An LCBO there will make a nice tit-for-tat arrangement between the 1860 Bayview landlord, RioCan, and the other lucky host to a local LCBO, Smart Centre, on Laird Drive. What to do? There is no business like a liquor and wine store to make a street “vibrant” in the parlance of BIA promoters. It may be good news that the local MPP’s name is Kathleen Wynne. Who knows? Does the Leaside Property Owners Association care about South Bayview? There are options to the LCBO. They’re not as good but better than nothing. Vincor International, owners of the Wine Rack brand, have sniffed around South Bayview more than once. And there is that appealing 21st Century solution seen in many U.S. states and all across Asia: the wine vending machine. Compact, secure, convenient and, dare we say, vibrant. Sadly, the LCBO just doesn’t want to know about this concept it seems. Last April’s much-trumpeted notion of liquor kiosks in supermarkets has been shown up as a tawdry election gimmick. Plans call for so few of the outlets you might drive miles to find one, if they are ever built. Grocers face long odds of LCBO Kiosk   Ontario should explore wine vending machines

3-D bus shelter for Downtown South Bayview

A crew from Bell Media’s Astral Out-of-Home Division was on the northwest corner of Bayview Avenue and Millwood Road this morning. When they were done, the neighborhood had a useful new bus shelter. It is described as three-dimensional which seems to mean that waiting passengers can get out of the weather on all sides. Some Astral shelters hardly deserve the name. They are canopy models and usually shoehorn onto narrow sidewalks. They have no sides or front and barely any top.
