FoNTRA opposes Bill 23: More Homes, Built Faster Act

We agree that there is a housing supply and affordability issue in Ontario and support the broad goal that new housing should be built and be available across a spectrum of incomes and needs. The focus of all orders of government should be on liveable communities where all residents can thrive and grow.

FoNTRA’s response raises ten points of objection in its submission to the Standing Committee of the Ontario Legislature. The legislation does many regressive things, but the most egregious is item #10 – to prohibit any third party appeals of development applications to the Ontario Land Tribunal.South Eglinton Davisville Residents' Association

A newsletter from South Eglinton Davisville Residents’ Association provides a summary of the open letter sent by the Federation of North Toronto Residents’ Associations (FoNTRA) to Premier Ford and members of the Standing Committee reviewing Bill 23, and a call to action with how you can have your say. A copy of this letter can be found on the FoNTRA website.

“There is a groundswell of opposition to the proposed legislation from community and environmental groups across the province. The opposition is from across the province from the smallest towns to the largest cities. There is much at risk if the legislation proceeds as planned. It is most important that all individual residents reach out to their MPP, the Mayor and their local councillor to express their concerns. The FoNTRA letter runs to four pages and we have provided a one page abbreviated version below. We ask our residents to read both versions.”

Bayview Biz: Now open, under construction, & hiring news!

Ramona’s Kitchen continues to work hard preparing 1608 Bayview Ave for their new restaurant. The building’s façade was recently refreshed, waiting for some new signage. Walking south and looking up to the top floor of 1578 Bayview Ave, Gold Hollow is now open for business! Safe body piercing, custom tattooing and fine body jewelry is what the sign says. You can see a 360° view of their new digs on Instagram here. At the corner of Belsize Dr., we can see that the lower level of 1560a Bayview Avenue is nearing completion. The Daughter Natural Wine Bar and Bottle Shop looks like they’re just about ready to open their doors. A peek into their windows after the sun set revealed dozens of bottles of vino ready for us to enjoy. A sign says that they’re hiring — see the picture above for details. Welcome to Bayview everyone!

The Last Salute honours Sunnybrook’s centenarian Veterans

At Sunnybrook, as the home to Canada’s largest Veterans Centre, it is important that we ensure our Veterans know they have not been forgotten, and that their sacrifices for Canada will always be remembered.

During Veterans Week, and every week, we hope you will find an opportunity to reflect, remember and honour the sacrifices of our Veterans. We thank them for their dedication and service to Canada.

Lest we forget.Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Events have taken place all week at Sunnybrook Veteran’s Centre to commemorate Veterans Week.

On Monday Nov. 7th The Last Salute exhibit was launched. “The Last Salute created by Photographer, Yuri Dojc and interviewer Alannah Campbell, opened up for the first time to Veteran residents, their families and Veterans Program staff.

“In 2023 – in honour of the 75th anniversary of the official opening of Sunnybrook – the project will move beyond the walls of the Veterans Centre so that these stories may be shared with all staff and beyond. You can catch a glimpse of The Last Salute in the Sunnybrook Service of Remembrance that will be posted on Sunnybrook’s You Tube channel on Friday November 11th as of 10:30 am. You can also look out for media coverage expected this week on Global TV Toronto, CTV National News, City TV, and CBC.”

Rosedale United’s warm winter coat drive needs 500 coats

In Toronto, over 18,000 people suffer from homelessness each night, burdened with facing the incredibly cold Canadian winter, and in some cases, even freezing to death.

As we enter the winter season, many of us will start to pull out our winter coats and many will buy new ones. However, warm clothes can be costly and inaccessible, especially for individuals experiencing homelessness.

In the past two years, we have collected and purchased 1,200 warm coats which we have distributed to four outreach agencies providing front line services to our less fortunate neighbours: Fred Victor (formerly the CRC), Metropolitan United Church, Sanctuary Toronto and the Roehampton Hotel Shelter.

This year’s goal: we are determined to collect another 500 warm jackets for the people of Toronto who don’t have the privilege of being able to purchase a warm coat. More than 500 is even better.
Rosedale United Church Warm Winter Coat Drive

When will coats be collected?

  • Tuesday, Nov 8th – 4:30pm to 6:30pm, and
  • Thursday, Nov 10th – 4:30pm to 6:30pm, and
  • Saturday, Nov 12th from 10am to 1pm at the west side door (located on Glen Ave) of Rosedale United Church (159 Roxborough Dr., Toronto, Ontario)

The many ways you can help:

  • Donate warm coats – one or more adult warm water/windproof winter jackets. (Good condition used, or new) and/or
  • Donate money to Rosedale United Church to help us buy warm jackets for the homeless. The cost of one warm jacket is approximately $100. Any amount helps. A tax receipt will be issued for contributions in excess of $25 and/or
  • Volunteer your help to collect and sort coats.

Music school now open in Robert Lowrey Piano building

Leaside residents have a brand-new music school to attend, and it’s right where you might expect it: on top of the country’s largest piano retail facility. Merriam School of Music have opened a new campus in the space at the historic Robert Lowrey Piano building at 943 Eglinton Avenue East.

Robert Lowrey Pianos was established around the late ’70s, while Merriam School of Music has been around for 34 years (since 1988). The famed showrooms of Robert Lowrey’s Piano Experts have long been the centre of piano life in Canada, and in 2020 received a much-acclaimed makeover and expansion by new owners Merriam Pianos. But new for 2022, one of the unused showrooms has now been completely remodelled to host a new teaching facility. It adds a third location to Merriam School of Music’s GTA presence, whose programs are high-school credit certified. The new campus offers piano, vocal and guitar lessons. Interested students can visit merriammusic.com to find out more.
