Demonstrators of various sorts who were at an Indigenous “unity” rally in Hamilton Saturday pulled down a statue of Canada’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald. It is a fairly emotional incident.

Trudeau to pull election plug Sunday whisperers tell Reuters

CTV quotes Reuters Thursday to say Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to launch a federal election campaign this Sunday, with the vote scheduled for Sept. 20. After months of speculation over the prospect of a pandemic election, Reuters is reporting that Trudeau is planning to visit Rideau Hall this weekend and ask Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to dissolve the 43rd Parliament and draw up the 338 writs, triggering a fall vote. CTV News has not yet independently verified this report.

Kick off on Sunday?

If the campaign kicks off this Sunday, the 2021 federal election will be 36 days in length, the shortest possible permitted under elections law. Triggering the election means that Canadians will be in for five weeks of campaigning, seeing the federal party leaders crisscrossing the country and pitching themselves, their candidates, and their platforms, under ongoing COVID-19 public health restrictions.

Man and woman in 427 bike accident were unseen for hours

OPP say a man and woman thrown off a motorcycle that went out of control near Highway 427 lay undiscovered for hours after the accident. The incident occurred between 1:30 and 3:00 a.m. Tuesday morning at Holiday Drive in Etobicoke. The two weren’t spotted until sunrise by a passerby. Paramedics say both victims have been taken to hospital with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries.

Diperie ice cream set to open as Bayview finds its way back

The ice cream chain called La Diperie will grow as the firm prepares to open at 1559 Bayview. Also coming is a new hair studio, Lilac Hair Studio. It will open at the location made legendary by Pat’s Barber Shop. A new tenant (unknown) will move into the former Your Clothes Friend. It’s now at 1633 Bayview. A new restaurant will open at the former Two Dogs at 1620. It is a Mediterranean place called Mirage. Elsewhere, even after the arrival of three cannabis stores many empty shops are left. The former locations for Scholar’s Choice, Bloom Beauty (was 1625, but has moved across the street), Glow at 1673 and Culinary Arts are some of the empty stores we saw.
