Advance polling for the general election began today (Friday, October 9, 2015). Those who have already voted said one would never have known there was an American League playoff game starting just as the polls opened at noon. There were as many as 50 people waiting to vote in the gymnasium of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School on Garfield Ave. Similar lineups were reported at the polling station in the Leaside Arena. Polling extends right through the weekend including Sunday and Monday. It is the first four-day advance voting in federal history. Some voters complained that they had not received a voting card although most had. It is easily possible to determine that status at elections.ca. Voting was permitted with one’s name on the list and a driver’s license.. Registration is relatively easy online. Good advice is to take a passport too as well as a driver’s license. But a driver’s license was sufficient ID at the OLPH school station.
Defining new wards: Does Toronto need 37, 44, 57? More?
by •
As some may know there is a review of the City of Toronto ward boundaries underway. The linked series of maps reveals Options being considered which would create as many as 57 wards or reduce them to as few as 37. At present, there are 44 wards. It might be useful to check the Team page as well to learn just who is at work on your behalf. City Council will decide what is enacted.
Kitchener cops release composite of man in arrow killing
by •
A Kitchener neighborhood is said to be quite on edge following the killing of a man with an arrow. Michael Gibbons, 60, was found outside his home on Margaret Ave. Monday morning with the arrow protruding from his chest. Investigation has led to the creation of the inset depiction of a man who police wish to talk to about the death. The Waterloo Regional Police Service said the man is being sought as a result of information gathered during a “mirror canvass” early Wednesday morning, when 250 vehicles and pedestrians were stopped while travelling on Margaret Avenue. “We’re just looking to identify him to assist us in the investigation,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Haffner. “It’s a concentrated effort to identify anyone that may have been in the area on the Monday. “A mirror canvass is an investigation tactic where police visit a crime scene on a later date at a time similar to the original incident, when daily street activity may mirror what was going on at the time of the crime.
“Rally Spoons” banned from Rogers Centre for Jays games
by •
The IKEA “Rally Spoon” will not be allowed inside Rogers Centre for Blue Jays games. A spokesperson for the Centre said that the spoons are being kept out of Friday’s Jays-Rangers game “due to a concern that they will be thrown.” It is a reasonable concern. The wooden spoons — 12,000 of them — are part of IKEA’s effort to get into the spirit of the American League playoffs. Spokesperson Elisa Wegenast issued a release in which she said: “Every time the Blue Jays get on base during a game, things get cooking, and that’s when the players ‘Stir It Up’” The wooden spoons will be distributed at 12:30 p.m. until game time (or until they run out) all around the Rogers Centre. They appear to be about a foot in length. Rogers Centre may have trouble keeping track of all those spoons. Hope no one starts a spoon fight.

Many sublteties as racial profiling verdict draws $8,000 fine
by •
There are a number of subtleties in a case of racial profiling by an employee of Shoppers Drug Mart that has recently been disposed of by the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. For many, the most striking aspect will one that is not subtle — the rather rude behaviour of the employee. But the tribunal found that there had been racial profiling “consciously or unconsciously” without it seems any language or specific act (apart from rudeness) that might have led to such a decision. It happened in the evening at the Shoppers Drug Mart Bloor St and Spadina Rd. in 2011. Metro News
Josh Matlow comes out for South Bayview Liberals
by •
Josh Matlow (Ward 22) is one of a number of municipal representatives who have decided to make public his support of certain candidates running for federal office. His alignment with the Liberal candidates in Don Valley West and St. Paul’s isn’t a surprise but it reveals a small political divide among City members who technically carry to no label. Jon Burnside (Ward 26) is shown as specifically not supporting any candidate. You must guess. Interesting little exercise by Global News
Watch Blue Jays in a crowd at Nathan Phillips Square
by •
A Jumbotron of sorts has been installed at Nathan Phillips Square to permit mass viewing of the post-season Jays games late this afternoon and beginning at noon Friday, October 9. It is, as anyone with a memory knows, 22 years since the birds broke into after season play. We love this miracle. “It’s an exciting time for Toronto. Let’s come together and cheer on our Blue Jays at Nathan Phillips Square,” said Mayor John Tory. “See you in the #BirdsNest!” The first two home games take place in the afternoon on Thursday, October 8 at 3:30 p.m. and Friday, October 9 at 12:30 p.m. Food trucks will be on the Square to give viewers a stadium-like experience.
