Blue Jays relief pitcher Robert Osuna was at Howard Talbot Park the other night. He spoke modestly of his role with the contender Jays and of his family where baseball runs strong. He has had a somewhat rocky September but his strong record of 15 saves is very fine.
Councillor Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth) will attend the unveiling of The Gathering of the Clans mosaic project at Todmorden Mills Heritage Site. The opening ceremony will be led by Elder Dorothy Peters and singer Marie Gaudet. The date is Sunday, September 27 between 2 to 4 p.m. with remarks at 2:30 p.m. Todmorden Mills Heritage Site is at 67 Pottery Rd.
North York Community Council will meet Tuesday, October 6, 2015 to consider a report from the City Planning Department which recommends bylaw alterations necessary for the construction of a Costco store on 42/46 Overlea Blvd. The proposal from Coscto is to retain the former Coca Cola office building as part of a large new store on the west side of the property with parking to the east. The proposal also calls for the creation of a three-island 18-pump gas station something that is opposed by Councillor Jon Burnside. In his current newsletter Mr. Burnside says he wishes the number of pumps could be reduced. In fact,18 pumps seems like a.lot. The Esso station at Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Merton St has about this number. They are organized two pumps to an installations with a pump on each side in different lanes. The planning report calls for a cash payment of $650,000 be used towards the cost of capital improvements in Thorncliffe Park such as, parks, a community centre or recreational facility. There will also be the usual “Section 37” payments made by Costco, a standard requirement on developers who are given bylaw easement. It will cost $175,000 to install traffic lights at five intersections to be created for access to the new store and there will a special charge back to Costco for this purpose. The linked BBC video is an interview with Arabic commentator Youssef Taha who says rather sadly it will only end when the simple Arab masses are better educated.
A news release from Metrolinx says today that it will take until the end of 2016. This information conforms to that given out in March of 2014 at Metrolinx briefing meeting in the Lea Room for the public. At that meeting, there were many skeptics that the job could be finished by that date. But the giant tunneling machines are in place as can be seen in the rather rare views above of the launch site. As to completion of the full project, the timeline now stretches to 2021. This is not a surprise though some had suggested the LRT could be finished earlier. The Brentcliffe site is a sidewalk superintendent’s dream except that unlike most construction sites there is nowhere for the public to take a peek. Among the ideas are a math and/or community scholarship in David Stickney’s name, a memorial park bench and/or plaque in a suitable area, that will tell the story of Dave’s community contributions as a neighbour, teacher and friend and the renaming of Markham Avenue in South Leaside to “Stickney Way”. The party this Saturday will offer aappetizers, a complimentary drink and guaranteed “great memories”. A new computer is apparently acting up, worrying some about the security of Canadian passports. They call it glitches we call it Garbage In, Garbage Out. But is it old news in a sense, although not trivial at all, that every terrorist, crook and general international felon would just love to get his hands on as many Canadian passports as possible.
