24 West Point cadets injured in traditional pillow fight

Twenty-four cadets have been treated for concussions, and other injuries including a broken nose, dislocated shoulder and a hairline fracture to the cheekbone after the annual “pillow fight” between upper classmen and freshmen (known as plebes) at West Point Military College in New York State last week. The pillow fight is not dissimilar to events at many universities in which the new arrivals are confronted in some form by the second year class.  It is said that in 2012 the confrontation carried on after the pillow fight and that 60 people were injured.

Glebe townhome development on site of former church

belsize-towns

Work is under way on six town homes to be built on the site of the former Glebe Presbyterian Church on Belsize Drive. The property sits officially on Belsize but the church’s door was at the corner of De Savery Crescent and Thurloe Ave. The design for the homes seemed attractive but it is said to have run into trouble because of the common underground garage with 13 parking spaces. The matter was referred to the Ontario Municipal Board and the City lost. Today the property is fully-fenced and work has begin on grading. The old church sign remains in place and overgrown behind green screening.

Tattooed killer removes tracking ankle bracelet and flees

Kevin Ronald Brooks

A nasty character with a tattooed tear drop coming out of his right is on the loose somewhere in Canada after figuring out how to remove a court ordered tracking anklet. Kevin Ronald Brooks, 28, was released from prison in June, after serving every day of a seven-year manslaughter sentence behind bars. Because authorities consider Brooks a high risk to re-offend, they issued a public warning about his release and obtained a court order requiring him to wear an electronic ankle bracelet and submit to daily curfew checks. He was serving time for the manslaughter death in April 2007 of Kevin Palmer in Saint John, N.B. The two men were sitting in a car in a city park when Brooks shot Palmer, 29, with a sawed-off shotgun he said he carried for protection due to a drug debt he owed. Brooks is white, 28 and has an elaborate tattoo on his neck. He has criminal convictions in a variety of places and could be anywhere.

TraceManes-iso of pad pic
There is a genuine glow on the community following the wonderful experience of the Georgia Walsh All-Star Games last weekend. It was fun and an enormous credit to Leaside. Now the longer task begins of raising funds to fulfill the vision of a renewed and safer playground. Conceptual depictions are shown above and below. A new splash pad is an expensive asset but the safety and enjoyment of interactive water is worth it. The drawings are by the firm of Harrington McAvan. The many sponsors of the games are shown below. Thanks to all. Anyone wishing to donate may do so at the RememberingGeorgiaWalsh site

garbage-truck-collision

The CBC reports Queen Street East at Coxwell Avenue is open again after being closed when a Toronto garbage truck apparently backed into a utility pole early Friday (September 4, 2015). The collision caused overhead streetcar wires to sag and come into contact with hydro wires. Streetcars were discontinued and buses took over. Photo Tony Smythe
