Fire wreckage flies to CTC parking lot

Holy Flying Wreckage! The burned out superstructure of the Canadian Tire Garden Centre is hoisted to the parking lot where it will be cut up for scrap. These scenes took place mid-morning Friday. An official on the scene was optimistic that Canadian Tire in the RioCan Leaside Centre, Laird and Eglinton, will re-open next week. He said a misconception about sprinkler systems led many to think that much more inventory was damaged than was really the case. Sprinkler systems are area-controlled and in the case of this fire only the most westerly system was triggered.

Sarah’s Food Drive ends Saturday, Oct 6, 2012

Sarah

There are thousands of public spirited people who help the Daily Bread Food Bank. One local girl is a good example to us all.  Sarah Jordan, the 10-year-old Leaside youngster, along with members of her family, has raised thousands of dollars in food for the Daily Bread Food Bank.  This is the fifth annual drive bearing Sarah’s name. On her website Sarah summarizes the origins of this excellent. undertaking  “One night during dinner, I told my mom that I was full, even though I still had lots of food left on my plate. My mom told me that there were people that lived five minutes away from us that didn’t have food for dinner and that we were so fortunate that we did. Minutes later, we heard a story on the radio talking about the Thanksgiving food drive for the Daily Bread Food Bank. They were in need of a lot more food and were asking people to donate. After hearing that, I told my mom that I wanted to do something to help, so I decided to start my own food drive.”  As is often the case  around South Bayview, Tremblett’s Valu Mart, 1500 Bayview Ave.,  is a key player is getting the good work done. You can drop off canned goods there or buy a Thanksgiving hamper for the food bank for $25.

We love our South Bayview, trucks and all

It’s not unknown for big trucks like this Canada Cartage behemoth to take a couple of stabs at getting around the corner of Belsize Drive and Bayview Ave today (Thursday). This fellow actually needed three goes before he was able to clear all traffic. He had some help from fellow drivers but maybe not as much as he felt he needed.

RIM boys sing “We’re Gonna Keep Lovin’ You”

A band of BlackBerry Vice Presidents sing a song praising all their developers for their patience. Report by Sam Datta-Paulin. Meanwhile analysts don’t like the Blackberry maker’s stock as much as those who already own it. The market bid the stock up today on news of better than expected earnings while the know-it-alls on the sidelines said, among other things, that it was a much smaller disaster than expected. Poll says Justin would easily win next election

Back in May we said that if Justin Trudeau became leader of the Liberal Party it would be the last political act of his father. Correction. If, as a public opinion poll out today says, Justin could easily lead the Liberals to power in Ottawa, that will be the last political act of the late Pierre Trudeau. It’s remarkable. Young Trudeau may turn out to be the most able new political newcomer since Wilfred Laurier. But it is absolutely true that he starts his run for the top with an enormous advantage — his father’s name. Without it, Justin would be, if not nobody, certainly just an another also ran.  As the old saying has it — it’s better to lucky than smart. (and we’re not saying Justin isn’t smart. But he is luckier than smart).  Previous post.   National Post

Sunnybrook’s Uptown on Restaurant Makeover

The Food Network will air The Uptown episode of Restaurant Makeover tomorrow night, Thirsday, September 27, 2012. The Uptown was for many years the Sunnybrook Restaurant at the east end of the Sunnybrook Plaza. Earlier this year it was re-made according to the tender mercies and wisdom of Restaurant Makeover. Tomorrow’s show will be aired on the Food Network at 9 p.m. Should be fun and of course the restaurant folks are inviting everyone to come over and watch the show.
