Livent Inc. convictions upheld

The Ontario Court of Appeal has upheld fraud convictions against former theatre chiefs Garth Drabinsky, 61, and Myron Gottlieb, 68, but reduced their prison sentences by two years. That means at a maximum that Drabinsky faces five years and Gottlieb four years. It isn’t likely they will serve the whole of their terms. They had previously been convicted of fraud and sentenced by Superior Court Justice Mary Lou Benotto. They had, the court concluded, used the corporation, Livent Inc.. to defraud the public of some $500 million in loans and investments.

2 high-profile women contest Don Valley West

The riding of Don Valley West will be a battleground for two high-profile women in next month’s Ontario General Election. Former business news anchor and journalist Andrea Mandel-Campbell (left) is squaring off against Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne. Mandel-Campbell is running for the Progressive Conservative Party. Her hopes may be lifted by the recent conservative bent of the riding. It elected a Conservative MP John Carmichael earlier this year. Ms Wynne however is well-known, popular and a scrappy campaigner. She is a former school trustee and quite active in the riding.

Close Zoos, trim libraries says City Manager

City Manager Joe Pennachetti (inset) is recommending that the City close the Toronto Zoo and the Riverdale Zoo. He also is also telling the City to trim libraries and sell off three municipally owned theatres. His total list of cuts is thought to be long and close to the many cuts recommended by the consulting firm of KMPG. A report from City Staff will be released today detailing what is being recommended. Councillor Mike Del Grande, the city’s budget chief, said cuts are painful but necessary steps needed to bring the city’s finances in line.

Guess what? Rubber pylons are taken away

The rubber pylons that have been decorating the east side of Bayview Ave were gathered up by a guy in an anonymous looking truck and taken away today. Hope they weren’t stolen. Probably not. But just what it means in terms of getting the sidewalks finished is as usual quite unclear. Maybe something is about to happen. Maybe not. Many people say get answers. Actually, there are no lack of answers. It’s just that none of them are any good. Stay tuned.
