Old theatres should be retail space

Councillor Matlow (Ward 22) is quoted in InsideToronto.com expressing concern about the future of the Regent and Mt. Pleasant theatres on Mt Pleasant Rd. It won’t be surprising  to anyone that the theatres face a tough challenge to survive in the world of the Silver Screen multiplexes and wide-screen home movie downloads. The concern as expressed in the story is a that the theatres somehow be given a future which coincides with “community” preferences. It’s not entirely clear what this would be. As we see it, the dowdy old theatres of Mt Pleasant will have to face a future most likely as retail properties. The Bayview Playhouse has emerged as a Shoppers Drug Mart which is a credit to Bayview Ave.  It would be wise not to expect the Mt Pleasant and the Regent to be made into museums or art galleries. InsideToronto.com

Whimsical holiday weekend medley

For a supposedly rainy day, Saturday was dashed sunny. And so Mr Duck, possibly a decoy, was out at Elegant Garage. (No ducks were injured in the making of this post). Down the street, the Hoodie Buddies, sweatshirts with built-in headphones (!) were on display at DEW. Right, we’re still having trouble processing the new Shoppers Drug Mart sign. That marquee hasn’t looked better since it was hefted up there in 1936 as part of the Bayview Playhouse movie theatre. Check out historic pictures from an earlier Bulldog post.

Shoppers Drug nearing completion

With the opening set for the 24th of May weekend. the new Shoppers Drug Mart on South Bayview is busy inside and out. This week we got a look at the dramatic signage and frontal treatment of the new store. It is housed in the 1936 building which for many years was a movie theatre, the Bayview Playhouse. Today the red and white Shoppers signs are complimented by black marble and brass appointments. Very nice.

Ghost of Aisle 43 exorcised

Ah yes, the days when you could nip along to Aisle 43 and pick up a bottle or two of not half bad Canadian wine. Gone for quite a while now. Summer of 2010 actually and there’s the friendly Robert to remind you. Now the ghost of the little wine kiosk will be well and truly driven out of the old Bayview Playhouse as Shoppers Drug Mart seals up the doorway, perhaps for ever. Inside, the small room that held your wine is gone, opened up to become part of the new pharmacy with its many offerings (but not wine).

Schreiber out at Shoppers Drug Mart

Shoppers Drug Mart is on the hunt for a new chief after it was announced Wednesday that CEO Jurgen Schreiber is quitting the drug giant. Shoppers is an anchor in every business district and street in the country. The move comes suddenly after Shoppers had it first earnings decline since 2001. During his tenure, Schreiber oversaw the somewhat revolutionary two-storey drug store format (right) at Shoppers. As is known, such a location will be installed on South Bayview in the old Bayview Playhouse. Schreiber will be replaced temporarily by Chairman David Williams, a former food retail executive, until a permanent successor is found.

Off limits bouncy castle injures two toddlers

Two toddlers sneaked behind tapes and got into a bouncy castle that was not open to the public. They trapped inside the playhouse when a gust of win swept the it as much as 30 feet in the air and then sent it crashing to the ground. The two New Hampshire brothers, 2 and 3 years old, were both hospitalized, with the younger boy in critical condition. The toddlers climbed into the bouncy house while it was in a restricted area of Sullivan Farm, in Nashua, that was supposed to be off limits to the attendees of the festival. Witnesses said they saw the bouncy house fly up in the air before it came crashing down in a neighboring orchard. It seems to a warningagain that these popular toys need complete grounding and adult supervision. Previous — Flying bouncy castle hurts kids

Wreckers demolish Glebe Presbyterian

The wreckers went to work on Glebe Presbyterian Church on Belsize Drive yesterday and today. What’s left of the century-church is rubble and the 1913 foundation.  The church sign still stands among shrubs on the large property overlooking Belsize. A small sign for the Mother Nature Day Care service and a  kids playhouse are forlorn reminders of the history of this space. As previously posted here, there is a plan to build six town homes on this site.
