Family Ride gathers at Rykert and Broadway Sunday

The all-electric New Flyer bus will run on the 35 Jane route. The city will be testing out buses from New Flyer, Proterra Inc. and BYD Canada Co. Ltd. to see which is best. By 2025, the TTC says it hopes to purchase only electric buses and the goal is to have only electric vehicles in its fleet by 2040. A release said that Councillor Robinson, chair of the Transportation Committee, and Mayor Tory were present as the bus started off from the TTC Arrow Road Garage off near Sheppard Ave. and Highway 400.

The Moore Park Residents Association has sent a reminder to members about the second round of Gypsy Moth spraying by helicopter which may occur in Moore Park and adjoining neighborhoods early Monday or Tuesday.

Stop sign at Astor Ave. on Southvale for westbound traffic has been moved to Mallory Cres. (2018 picture Google)

City traffic engineers have rationalized the stop sign oddity which has long confused drivers and made it difficult for pedestrians to cross Southvale at either Astor Ave. or Mallory Cres. The change removes the stop at Astor for westbound traffic on Southvale and moves it to Mallory a short block to the west. There has been a stop sign for eastbound traffic at Mallory for many years. The previous arrangement made it easier for cars to turn off Astor or Mallory onto Southvale. But the absence of a stop at Astor for eastbound traffic, and at Mallory for westbound traffic, left pedestrians dodging cars at both intersections. Now all pedestrian crossings of Southvale can be made more safely at Mallory.

Excitement across Toronto and the country created a huge audience for Game 2 of the NBA finals featuring the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors. The Raptors lost Sunday’s game 109 to 104 making the series 1 and 1. Game 3 of the best of seven playoff series will be played Wednesday in Oakland with a 6 p.m. start Toronto time.

Apricot seed products recalled

Canadian Press carries an alert from the Food Inspection Agency recalling Apricot Power brand apricot seeds and apricot seed meal because of concerns about cyanide poisoning. Apricot Power products are made by Ecoideas Innovations Inc. in Markham. The dangerous ingredient is the natural toxin amygdalin. The agency says the compound has the potential to release cyanide when the bitter apricot seed kernels are ingested. It says humans can “detoxify” small amounts of cyanide but high amounts can be lethal. No illnesses have been associated with the products. Unclear is why just this brand is named in a recall if the issue is a natural phenomenon common to apricot seeds. Symptoms of acute cyanide poisoning include headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, seizures and coma.

Tanker rolls over on Highway 401 and Mavis Rd./OPP

OPP spent most of Sunday cleaning up this spectacular tanker truck rollover on the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 at Mavis Rd.  Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the double fuel tanker was loaded with diesel and approximately 23,000 litres of fuel spilled onto the highway. The cleanup went on into the afternoon. No injuries have been reported. The double tanker vehicle is often called by media the US a “rolling bomb.” This may or may not be a fair description and in this case there was no fire or explosion. Diesel is less explosive than many other fuels.

There was no winning ticket for the $15 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw. However, the guaranteed $1 million prize went to a ticker holder in Quebec. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on June 5 will be approximately $18 million.
