Two people were injured and are recovering after a driver suspected of being impaired crashed his car into a patio built on the roadway of the new “carless” King St. The injuries are said to be not life-threatening. This occurred about 1.30 p.m. Saturday
This Saturday has seen the enormous Stratolaunch satellite launcher aircraft take off from the Mojave desert north of Los Angeles. The six-engined megajet with the wingspan of an American football field is the product of Stratolaunch Systems, the company founded in 2011 by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It is described as a giant flying launch pad, designed to hurtle satellites into low Earth orbit. It aims to offer the military, private companies and even NASA itself a more economical way to get into space.
A motorcyclist has died in a collision with a vehicle in Mississauga at Winston Churchill Blvd and Credit Valley Rd just after midnight Saturday. The man, 24, died in hospital.
A street-corner argument between a pedestrian, 25, and three persons in a car at King West and Brant Sts. prompted someone in a red-coloured Lexus (below) to open fire on the man. As many as four shots were fired. Remarkably, the victim is said to be recovering from his wound. Police say he was standing on a sidewalk when he became involved in the yelling match. No winning ticket was sold for the $16 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw. That means the jackpot for the next draw on April 19 will grow to approximately $25 million.
The voluminous Ontario budget seems to march across all aspects of daily life in the province and make changes previously unimagined, especially under the fretful Wynne government. Ontarians will be able to gamble on their phones and at desk tops in both lottery form and one-off event wagering. As Cynthia Mulligan reports, the implications of changes to car insurance, health care, transit and much else remain fully unknown until the fat budget book is better understood.
According to accumulated data, more than 30 infants have died in the US in the Fisher-Price Rock and Play sleeper. Growing concern about product, sold first in 2009, has caused the US consumer authorities to issue an urgent recall. Most of the babies were over three months and died when they rolled over and smothered in the vibrating sleeper. The same product is sold in Canada but regulations say it can only be used as a soother, not for unattended sleep. Just how this is policed seems elusive. It’s purpose is to make the infant go to sleep. Health Canada wrote to Mattel Canada in 2011 with concerns about the product, referring to Safe Sleep recommendations from Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Pediatric Society.
A one-legged man on a scooter apparently fell down an elevator shaft because the door had been vandalized, according to this report from Shauna Hunt of CityNews. The victim fell from the third floor, some 50 feet, breaking his remaining limb. Fire has struck parts of Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market Thursday, forcing the evacuation of several buildings. About 40 fire trucks and as many as 150 firefighters were called in to fight the blaze, which the city’s fire chief described as the worst he’s seen in 13 years.

Firefighters in Brampton are seen pouring water on the wreckage left after an overnight fire at a scrapyard on 331 Intermodal Drive. They were first called to the yard near Highway 407 and Goreway Drive at 5:19 p.m. Thursday.
