Fifty years after breaking into his play-by-play dream job with a chance opportunity to call a game on radio, beloved commentator Bob Cole will call his last NHL game Saturday night. Calling games for Hockey Night in Canada was his reason for living. Over the years Cole’s grasp of the game, excitement and special Bob Cole lingo made him an institution. No one before Cole ever said “Oh Baby” and made it sound cool. But Oh Baby, he did. It’s tonight at seven with the Leafs in Montreal.
Police are appealing for witnesses and surveillance or dash cam video taken at or near the corner of Yonge St. and Wedgewood Dr. north of Cummer Ave. in Willowdale Friday night. They say that at about 11:45 p.m. a man on his bicycle was attacked for reasons unknown by an unidentified man. Police said later Saturday that the weapon used was a golf club. The assualt critically injured the bike rider causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect then fled on foot in an unknown direction He is described only as wearing dark clothing.

OPP say they just don’t know what prompted a woman driver, 31, to try to cross the collector lanes of Highway 401 near McCowan Rd. at the scene of an accident Friday. They say her car had collided with another vehicle hauling a trailer in the westbound express lanes near McCowan Road sometime after 11 p.m. Tow trucks arrived on scene a short time later and their operators were speaking with the involved drivers when the woman attempted to cross over into the collector lanes of the highway. She was struck by a westbound vehicle in the collector lanes and pronounced dead on scene. Following the crash police decided to shut down the westbound express lanes and the westbound collector lanes on Hwy. 401 at Markham Road but Schmidt said that several drivers blew through the closure. MAN ON BIKE ATTACKED AT YONGE AND CUMMER
A man has been attacked whle riding his bicycle in a plaza on Wedgewood Dr. near Yonge St. and Cummer Ave. about 11:15 p.m. Friday. The assailant apparently struck the victim as he rode his bike. The cyclist is said to be critically injured.

Many Canadians will wonder just who the “malign foreign actors” will be trying to elect if, as the foreign minister fears, they try to meddle in Canada’s general election this fall. Chrystia Freeland made the warning at the G7 foreign ministers meeting in France. “We are very concerned,” the minister said in reply to a question. “I think our judgment is interference is very likely and we think there has probably already been efforts by malign foreign actors to disrupt our democracy.” While Freeland did not specifically mention Russia, Trudeau unloaded on the country when asked about the issue at an event in Toronto. “We have seen over the past number of years an increase in the interference or the implication of foreign actors in democratic processes. We saw very clearly that countries like Russia are behind a lot of the divisive campaigns, a lot of the divisive social media,” the prime minister said. Or, maybe Canada should be concerned about the old problem of Russian bum-shuffling its way to control of the Arctic Circle.
