A ticket sold in Ontario claimed the $5 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw. And the draw’s guaranteed $1 million prize went to a ticket holder on the Prairies. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on Oct. 17 will again be approximately $5 million.

A lively Saturday in Trace Manes Park saw many merchants and businesses participating in the Leaside Block Party in aid of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Food, music, games, face painting and raffles ruled the day with part of the price going to the hospital. Bayview Ave. from River St. to south of Dundas St. will remain closed until Monday for repairs to a watermain. The rupture occurred Friday and undermined the pavement. City Works says repairs have also been complicated by underground utilities, including gas and hydro.

It’s the way gambling works. The house usually wins and when there’s a string of losses, like now, that’s normal. There was no winning ticket for the $60 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw. There were however 14 Maxmillions prizes of $1 million won across the country.  The jackpot for the Lotto Max draw on Oct. 19 will remain at approximately $60 million, but the number of Maxmillions prizes will increase to 53.

Ontario Judge Michael Penny has removed Brandon Truaxe as the CEO of Deciem Cosmetics after hearing testimony that the erratic entrepreneur has “essentially lit the company on fire.”   Lawyer Mark Gelowitz, acting for one-third owner Estee Lauder acknowledged that Truaxe might once have been a “diabolical marketing genius building the brand…but he’s gone too far.” Most critically, the Truaxe move to shut down business at the firm’s many stores caused an avalanche of breach of lease complaints and threatened lawsuits from employees. There was also testimony that Truaxe’s Twitter and Instagram rampage was destroying the credibility of the brand. His announcement last week that he was shutting down business made lurid but unexplained allegations of criminality by staff in general. Cynthia Mulligan (the formidable City Cynthia) assays one of the many contests where incumbents collide. She cites some interesting nuances including backyard chickens. Guess who doesn’t care? A useful statistic in races such as St. Paul’s is just how the combined electorate is divided in percentage terms by natural incumbency. It isn’t necessarily 50/50.
