President Trump is talking with contempt about Canada has he threatens to “ruin” Canada’s economy if necessary. As talks continue in Washington in the hunt for some form of trade agreement, Mr. Trump has told reporters followers that he can force Canada into a deal or ruin its economy. He said all he had to do is threaten Canada’s cars “and they say, ‘Okay we’ll make a deal!’” He said: “So every time I have a problem with these, you know, many of these countries that we’re talking about, especially the big car countries,” he went on. “I just say, ‘Okay! Look, that’s okay. I’m going to put a 20 per cent tax on your cars.’ ‘We’ll do it! We’ll do it, we’ll agree.’ Actually in Canada, a tax on cars would be the ruination of the country,” he continued.

This is the scene that Willy Bouchard witnessed from his window Saturday morning as a nearby townhouse burned. The two-alarm fire broke out at around 7 a.m. on Laidlaw St. near Queen and Dufferin Sts. No injuries were reported.

King St. is again closed between Spadina and University Aves. to permit the Toronto International Festival to run a street festival associated with its annual screenings. It occurs despite the enormous inconvenience to transit users. The TTC’s King line is split in two with trams doing contortions to turn around on either side. This closure is also a bit of a finger at Mr. and Mrs. Ordinary Car Driver. They have been kicked off the street in the name of faster transit. It is the fifth year the street has been closed for a TIFF event and last year Mayor Tory suggested it would be the last time. The closure began Thursday and will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday.

No winning ticket was sold for the $50 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw. One of two Maxmillions prizes of $1 million dollars each that were up for grabs was claimed by ticket holder in Ontario The jackpot for the next Lotto Max draw on Sepember.14 will grow to some $55 million and there will be four Maxmillions prizes.

Toronto Hydro has said that residents should expect power outages Sunday and Monday as forecasters predict heavy rain starting early Sunday and continuing overnight. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the City of Toronto which reads:

Significant rain possible Sunday through Monday. The remnants of tropical depression Gordon are expected to affect Southern Ontario Sunday through Monday night. Rain is forecast to begin over Southwestern Ontario Sunday morning, reaching the Golden Horseshoe late in the day and Eastern Ontario Monday. The rain could be heavy at times with total rainfall amounts in the 30 to 60 mm range possible by Tuesday morning. These higher amounts will likely be just north of Lakes Erie and Ontario and along the St. Lawrence River valley. There is still considerable uncertainty in the timing and track of this weather system. Rainfall warnings may be required for some areas as the event draws nearer.

Former CIBC executive Tom Woods has been appointed chairman of the Hydro One board of directors. Woods has been serving in the job on an interim basis since August 14. The board of directors at the utility as well as its chief executive resigned earlier following the general election in June. Woods was among the 10 new directors named in August as replacements for the company’s previous 14-member board. During his career at CIBC, Woods served as chief financial officer, chief risk officer and vice chairman. Hydro One also announced the appointment of Chris Lopez as acting chief financial officer.

Toronto Police have released what appear to be good-likeness photos of a suspect in the shooting death of Jesse Graham-Richter in an Adelaide St. apartment August 19.  ‘I’m happy we have such good surveillance of the suspect,” Det. Robert Choe said Friday at the crime scene. “The images are out there. Somebody knows this guy and we are looking for help to identify him. I hope it won’t take long.” The killing occurred about 2 a.m. on that Sunday morning.  Graham-Richter wasn’t a resident of the building, but police say this was a targeted shooting. The suspect is described as black with light skin, under 5-foot-10, with a medium build and twisted braided black hair. He was wearing a black jacket and dark pants.

A man aged 37 is dead after his car rolled over early Friday in York Region near Major MacKenzie Dr. and Pine Valley Dr. about 1:45 a.m. The scene was discovered by a passerby.
