Sometimes there is a cop around when you really need one

A pleasing glimpse of Toronto life is seen in City News video as a cop let’s a woman climb aboard for a piggyback Friday across a flooded gutter caused by a watermain break. It was on Sherbourne St. that the police officer noticed the woman wearing flip flops as she dithered about leaping over the water. There is an “awww” from someone as the cop sees his duty. Another pedestrian helps out by retrieving a lost flip-flop.

Price of gas? Full tank cost pennies on Pleasant Blvd in 1928

Sure, regular gas is running $1.39 a litre at Merton and Mt. Pleasant but when the Ford dealership sat at 55 (now 78) Pleasant Blvd. just east of Yonge St. in 1928 the cost of a tank was pennies. The pump was at the curb, an outrageously dangerous but common practice in those days. The Yonge subway was still unimagined by anyone. The approach to the lane leading to Rosehill Ave. can be seen in the foreground. Yonge St. was still under construction. The building on the west side of Yonge to the right is now replaced. There was open land to the south of it and anyone could stroll into St. Michael’s Cemetery. It still sits there hidden from the bustle of Yonge and unknown to many.
