The CBC say the Canada Revenue Agency is checking postal codes to find any hint that the homeowners there are not paying as much as CRA thinks they should. What’s the matter with you? It might be Post Road, Chestnut Park or Bessborough Drive but the tax collection agency is on the job. The story Monday says this search is among “the wealthiest neighbourhoods” but no definition is given. They’re looking for undeclared wealth, signs that a taxpayer is actually richer than their income tax filings suggest. “Comparing someone’s lifestyle — cars, boats, houses — to their reported income helps us identify people who are non-compliant,” said CRA spokesperson Zoltan Csepregi. Details of the initiative, launched in the summer, were obtained by CBC News under the Access to Information Act.

Meghan and Harry at Invictus Games in Toronto

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry in the Spring, according to a statement released Monday. She is an actress, humanitarian campaigner and lifestyle blogger. She has also been divorced. Buckingham Palace released the news with another statement soon after from Harry’s brother, Prince William and his pregnant wife Kate, welcoming Markle to the royal family. “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan.” They said in a statement. “It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.” The announcement means another grand royal wedding is in the offing — the first since William and Kate married in 2011. The hockey gods were smiling on the Leaside Junior Wildcats Sunday as they sashayed into Canlan Arena at York University and thumped the league-leading Toronto Aeros 3-1. The Cats three-star alignment begins with Myah Bowal scoring two on the normally invincible Aeros. She struck twice in the third period to break the game open. It had been tied since Mackenzie Macdonald scored at 14.56 of the first for Leaside to keep them even with the Aeros. Toronto’s Teagan Grant had scored at 3.09 on a power play. The second period was scoreless and the Aeros were unable to answer Bowal’s offensive in the third. Quinn Johnston was there with assists on goals by Macdonald and Bowal. Boxscore

The venerable Beaches Santa Claus Parade will wend its way along Kingston Road Sunday. As reported by Inside Toronto you should bring along a letter to the great man and some toonies for the 36th Annual Christmas Hamper campaign. We agree. The parade serves as the launch of Community Centre 55’s Share-A-Christmas campaign. Following the parade, everyone is invited to stop by for a special reception at CC55 that will include a barbecue, crafts for the kids and photos with Santa. To the right, these hockey guys are puck-happy with their crested ice-projectiles marking the 65th anniversary of Leaside Memorial Community Arena. The $5 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw was claimed by a ticket sold somewhere in Ontario. And the guaranteed $1 million prize went to a ticket holder in British Columbia. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on Nov. 29 will again be approximately $5 million.

CBC reporter Mike Crawley attended the Ontario PC Convention Saturday and says the Progressive Conservative Party has put it cards on the table, releasing a full campaign platform with more than six months before the general election of 2018. Expectation is high among Tories and strategy never more scrutinized after the party lost two elections that many said it should have won. The Ontario Liberal Party has been in power under Dalton McGuinty and then Kathleen Wynne for 14 years. The platform is presented in a magazine-style document called the People’s Guarantee. In it, Brown signs a guarantee not to run for a second term if he fails to implement his five key promises. Those promises are:

• A 22.5 per cent tax cut for the middle class.
• A 75 per cent refund of child care costs.
• 12 per cent more off hydro bills.
• $1.9 billion in new funding for mental health, what the PCs call the largest such commitment by any province.
• Ontario’s first Trust, Accountability and Integrity Act.

Some things never change

The supervising contractor says the new Costco is on schedule to open in February on Overlea Blvd barring very bad weather. Work continues furiously at the site through the weekend. Expectation is that the store will open, fully-stocked and ready for business toward the end of February. To the right and below there is also much work and alteration underway at the East York Town Centre across the street. New storefronts that face Overlea are nearing completion while work continues on the large dialysis centre in the space formerly occupied by Target. The centre will be operated by St. Michael’s Hospital. A restaurant called Kandahar Kabab, Afghan Cuisine, has opened in the former Brewers Retail building.

Leaside Junior Wildcats

Leaside Junior Wildcats travel to Oakville and North York this weekend to face powerhouse squads in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. Oakville Junior Hornets have stung their way to second spot in the PWHL. They face the Cats in Oakville Saturday. Sunday, Head Coach Kim McCullough’s charges head to York University to play the league-leading Toronto Aeros. Good luck ladies.
