Ontario ticket claims $5 million Lotto 649 draw jackpot

The $5 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw was claimed by a ticket sold somewhere in Ontario. And the guaranteed $1 million prize went to a ticket holder in British Columbia. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on Nov. 29 will again be approximately $5 million.

PC leader Brown meets party, brings promises for election

CBC reporter Mike Crawley attended the Ontario PC Convention Saturday and says the Progressive Conservative Party has put it cards on the table, releasing a full campaign platform with more than six months before the general election of 2018. Expectation is high among Tories and strategy never more scrutinized after the party lost two elections that many said it should have won. The Ontario Liberal Party has been in power under Dalton McGuinty and then Kathleen Wynne for 14 years. The platform is presented in a magazine-style document called the People’s Guarantee. In it, Brown signs a guarantee not to run for a second term if he fails to implement his five key promises. Those promises are:

  • A 22.5 per cent tax cut for the middle class.
  • A 75 per cent refund of child care costs.
  • 12 per cent more off hydro bills.
  • $1.9 billion in new funding for mental health, what the PCs call the largest such commitment by any province.
  • Ontario’s first Trust, Accountability and Integrity Act.

The supervising contractor says the new Costco is on schedule to open in February on Overlea Blvd barring very bad weather. Work continues furiously at the site through the weekend. Expectation is that the store will open, fully-stocked and ready for business toward the end of February. To the right and below there is also much work and alteration underway at the East York Town Centre across the street. New storefronts that face Overlea are nearing completion while work continues on the large dialysis centre in the space formerly occupied by Target. The centre will be operated by St. Michael’s Hospital. A restaurant called Kandahar Kabab, Afghan Cuisine, has opened in the former Brewers Retail building.

Leaside hits road to face league-leading squads on Sat/Sun

Leaside Junior Wildcats travel to Oakville and North York this weekend to face powerhouse squads in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. Oakville Junior Hornets have stung their way to second spot in the PWHL. They face the Cats in Oakville Saturday. Sunday, Head Coach Kim McCullough’s charges head to York University to play the league-leading Toronto Aeros. Good luck ladies.

It was the seventh year the tree has been lighted at St. Clement’s Parkette, Yonge St. and St. Clement Ave. Then, across the top you see worthy events both Saturday and in the days ahead. A moose which has been meandering through Markham during Friday is said by police to be resting in a ravine late in the afternoon. The moose was first seen in Buttonville Airport but has since moved on. Authorities are hoping to figure out how to tranquillize the beast and take it to a safer place. As the video above shows, the great animal had a very narrow miss crossing a highway. Moose on Twitter

Eric Cole, wildlife care manager at the Toronto Zoo, says it will be crucial to capture the animal before dark or it will become even harder to track. “You have immobilize it. You’re talking about an animal that’s 1,400 lbs — it’s sheer power and it’s not used to human contact. You can’t throw nets on it, so it needs to be tranquilized,” he told CBC Toronto. Cole explained the moose would have travelled from quite a bit farther north, perhaps near Peterborough or even Algonquin Park. “It’s very unusual for it to come this far south,” he said. “He’s come quite a bit out of his natural habitat.”

The Instant Pot programmable pressure cooker has sold out at Canadian Tire in Leaside in what appears to be a few hours based on posts to the Facebook group Leaside Community. Writers there are dreamy-eyed about this cooking appliance as essentially worry free, unlike a conventional pressure cooker. It is a Canadian company as well according to the CT website.

New lights can analyse video of traffic pileups and adjust

Toronto traffic-light crews are installing new signals which sense and adjust to the flow of vehicles. The work began Friday at Yonge St. and Yonge Boulevard where Mayor Tory was present early in the day.  The job will take a few weeks to finish and see the lights installed at 22 intersections for a pilot period. As reported by CTV, the new lights can sense real-time traffic data through the use of video-analysis. They can also communicate and automatically synchronize with other smart signals in their vicinity. The City is testing two different technologies as part of its pilot project. Smart signals manufactured under the name InSync will be installed at 10 intersections on Yonge between Yonge Boulevard and Castlefield Avenue while smart signals manufactured under the name SCATS will be used at 12 intersections on Sheppard Ave. between Neilson Rd. and Meadowvale Rd.
