Ciaren Maxwell, a celebrated royal marine, was a Catholic boy who was beaten up by Irish Unionists in Northern Ireland. In adulthood, the respect accorded his regiment and patriotic work it did were not enough it seems to outrank ties of blood and religion to an Irish terrorist gang dedicated to killing police. Maxwell used his training and access to explosives and equipment to construct bombs for the terrorists. Monday he was sentenced to 23 years in prison but the penalty seems unlikely to erase the mistrust sown by his conduct.
The three walk-down spaces in the building at 1560 Bayview Ave. have had the lease signs removed (at least they were gone Monday) and the front windows recovered with blank paper. Through the uncovered window on the space on the corner of Bayview and Belsize Drive, floor markers may be seen. These suggest that the X on the box marker is a locator for installation of something. It is not much and speculative to be sure but the neighbourhood is long-suffering when it comes to the chronically vacant spaces in this prominent corner building.
The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons is hearing a discipline matter against a Georgetown physician who, according to complaints, took to showing women patients and women employees, naked and semi-naked pictures of himself. This occurred after Dr. Nigel Mark Phipps had been practicing for more than 30 years. One patient, identified only as Patient A, had been a patient of Phipps for years but fled from his office in complete distress and confusion the day he showed her pictures one of which, she claims, showed his engorged penis. Councillor Joe Mihevc (Ward 21) has had a tour of the seldom-seen St. Clair Reservoir that sits below Winston Churchill Park. The enormous holding place for fresh water was built in 1931. One person was pronounced dead early Monday at the scene of a truck accident said to involve a load of paint. The flames and burned-out wreckage were a testament to the inferno. The crash occurred on Highway 401 near Avenue Rd. and caused a large backup. Kevin Misener of 680 News said the vehicle was carrying paint. The fire was first reported about 5.15 a.m.

The Toronto Star says Sunday night that Environment Minister Glen Murray will resign his portfolio Monday morning and further declare he will not run again in the riding of Toronto Centre. Beyond that, Murray’s plans are unstated but the Star says he is leaving to take a “high-profile” job. His decision comes at a time of shifting ground as redistribution reduces the size of Toronto Centre. At the same time, Catholic school trustee Jo-Ann Davis is making a run to snare the Ontario Liberal candidacy in the new riding of University Rosedale (which includes Moore Park). Davis represents the TCDSB Ward 9, a huge constituency holding the Ontario ridings of St Paul’s, Toronto-Centre and Trinity-Spadina. Murray, 59, is a former mayor of Winnipeg. He has been, says writer Robert Benzie, Wynne’s point person on climate change. More
