Public School Trustee Gerri Gershon is saying this week that Micheal Kennedy and David Ehrlich, principals of Rolph Road Elementary School and Northlea Elementary and Middle School, will be heading to new assignments at other schools in the fall. Their replacements will be Sandra LaRosa at Rolph Road and Barbara Sandler at Northlea EMS.

A report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal seems to be trying to make the case, as interpreted by many media sources, that artificial sweeteners do not appear to help people lose weight, suggesting instead it may cause them to gain weight. The reporting says observational studies that looked at consumption over time suggested that people who regularly consumed them by drinking one or more artificially sweetened beverages a day had a higher risk for health issues like weight gain, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

But a major caveat to the idea that the diet drinks are directly to blame is contained well down in most stories. For example: “It’s not yet clear whether artificial sweeteners actually cause harm, however. Observational studies that link the sweeteners to health problems do not prove the sweeteners themselves are responsible. Other factors may muddle the link; people who consume more artificial sweeteners may eat more processed food (or just eat more) which is linked to a higher risk for obesity or heart-related problems” Maybe not the finest moment for research or journalism.

Home sales in June posted their largest monthly drop in seven years, driven by a plunge in the Greater Toronto market, the Canadian Real Estate Association said Monday, the latest evidence that a cool-down in the housing sector is taking hold. Transactions last month were down 6.7 per cent compared with May on a national basis, the third consecutive monthly decline, with the Greater Toronto Area registering a 15.1 per cent drop. Home sales are down 14.1 per cent from the record level set in March.

The owner of Meli Baklava and chocolate bar at 238 Queen St West has bad luck in spades as mice are seen by passersby and video is posted to Youtube. “We cover everything, those are strictly for display, we would never serve anything that’s not fresh,” owner Julie Kyriakaki told CTV news. Kyriakaki said she has mousetraps all around the store, because the rodents have been an ongoing problem at the building, which is occupied by multiple food vendors. “There’s the racks there that they come under and through, and unfortunately or fortunately, this is a shared space and we can’t block it,” Kyriakaki said.

Josef Newgarden has won his second Honda Indy Sunday. It’s the fifth career win for Newgarden, who also claimed the 85-lap course on the streets surrounding Exhibition Place in 2015. The young volunteers with red shirts and simple code TPNNO2017 printed in white on the back dashed among residents, children and politicians in R.V. Burgess Park on a sun-filled Saturday at the 12th annual Thorncliffe Park Neighbour’s Night Out. Here are some pictures from the TPNNO Facebook account and from The South Bayview Bulldog. People in their cultural dress both colourful and modest crowded the tents of politicians and government bodies of which there were many. Three bouncy concessions were mobbed by kids and the modern splash pad was shooting spray all afternoon. A number of private concessions sold clothing, costume jewellery and women’s shoes and accessories.

A parent has complained on Leaside Community Facebook that her son was waylaid by three others about 7.30 Saturday night at Bessborough School by three boys. The trio punched the lad, kicked him and stole his black & brown Tracker backpack. The mom who reports this says two of the three were wearing white hoodies and the other a black hoodie. One was wearing Sperry shoes. Among the many responses are people urging the woman to call police if she hasn’t already. Many say they can’t believe it happened in this neighbourhood. Another says a “neighbourhood watch needs to be re established in our hood. Also can everyone agree to do/say something if they see something happening? I can’t believe not one person saw this. I’ll be asking the teens if these kids sound familiar and will dm you if I hear anything.” Yet another notes that the school or surrounding homes might have had cameras, a good reason for calling police.
