Classy Oilers fans sing Star Spangled Banner with gusto

Twitter is afire Sunday evening with hockey fans at home and in the U.S. congratulating Edmonton Oilers fans for singing the US national anthem with enthusiasm when the PA system failed. One fan tweeted “hockey fans in the USA should take notice.” “The Edmonton Oilers fans sing an awesome rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, ” said another. “Golly, those Canadian folks are friendly to belt out the Star Spangled Banner as well as Oh Canada. Great job”, said Jeff Ulmer. The Oilers lead the series two games to one after the Ducks defeated them 6-3 Sunday. Twitter

Fit for Post Road, stone home sits 20 feet from Mt. Pleasant

This elegant stone residence is number 88 Glenrose Ave. on the closed portion of the street where it meets Mt. Pleasant. It is accessed by car to the west from Inglewood Dr. But this house, seemingly fit for Post Road, sits a sidewalk’s width away from busy Mt. Pleasant. It looks like the occupant could park on the east side of the house by rolling off Mt. Pleasant. What appears to be a decorative chimney separates the front door from french doors off, presumably, the sitting room.

Dad’s chocolate chip cookies gone but oatmeal survives

Mondelez International, owner of Christie’s, has discontinued Dad’s chocolate chip cookies and the product is finally disappearing from store shelves never, it seems, to return. The original Dad’s oatmeal and oatmeal chocolate chip milk-dippers are still being made. They date from 1929. The Dad’s brand is only available in Canada. It was created by the Sturges family in Los Angeles. Their winning formula for an oatmeal cookie took off in both Canada and the U.S. The U.S. franchises eventually went out of business and, in 1972, three Canadian franchises joined forces to create the Dad’s Cookie Company. It introduced the chocolate chip version in the early 1980s. In 1986, Dad’s became part of U.S.-based Nabisco, then in 2012 they were gobbled up by Mondelēz International, one of the largest snacks companies worldwide. But sales dwindled in the face of a world that has more brands of chocolate chip cookies than a tree has leaves.

Proposal on tram wins zing, zing, zing of her heartstrings

Clang, clang, clang went the trolley
Ding, ding, ding went the bell
Zing, zing, zing went my heart strings
From the moment I saw him I fell — Trolley Song

Raj Dhawan and Yvonne Choi are happily engaged to be married after the groom-to-be organized a surprise proposal Saturday on a specially-rented TTC antique streetcar. The vehicle was timed to be parked outside Yvonne’s nail salon (a visit organized by her twin sister and Raj’s collaborator). The tram was filled with friends and family to share in the moment. All in all, a remarkable bit of managing things. May the rest of their lives go so smoothly. Raj and Yvonne met a decade ago in school but were linked up three years ago by a chance meeting at Montreal airport where she was between assignments as a fight attendant. He was early for his trip back to Toronto on a business trip. She saw him, they sat down in a restaurant and the rest, as they say.  Ding, ding, ding indeed

Toronto EMS deputy commander Evert Steenge told the CBC the victim plunged about 10 metres. He was taken to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition. The main floor of MLG houses a Loblaws with a one-storey escalator to the basement parking.
