Eight jailed in UK for “slavery ring” of 400 Polish refugees

A ring of eight ex-patriot Poles living in Birmingham has been convicted and sentenced to terms of 5 to 11 years for creating and running a modern slavery ring made of up their own countrymen. As many of 400 marginal Polish refugees were brought to the UK, including alcoholics, homeless and former prisoners. They were forced into heavy and menial work for which they were often paid with a small amount of food. Enforcers would beat those who complained. The investigation revealed that members of a family named Brzezinski led the ring. One man who complained about living conditions and pay had his arm broken, was refused medical care, and then ejected from the accommodation because his injury left him unable to work. Another was stripped naked in front of other workers, doused in surgical chemical iodine, and told that the gang would remove his kidneys if he did not keep quiet. Gang members were said to have lived in luxury. One drove a Bentley. The gang was revealed by the anti-slavery charity Hope for Justice. The charity said 51 of the victims eventually made contact at its outreach drop-in centres. The organization was then able to flag the slavery ring’s existence to West Midlands Police.

Leonard goes home to LA, pal Green also leaves the Raptors

Kawhi Leonard will sign with the NBA Los Angeles Clippers in a deal that also strips Danny Green from the Raptors squad. Leonard was born and grew up in California. Leonard decided to join the Clippers after Los Angeles pulled off a stunning transaction to also get Paul George from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Leonard’s contract with Clippers will be worth $142 million (all figures US) over four years – not the five-year, $190 million deal he could have received from the Raptors – and his departure also cost Toronto the services of free agent forward Danny Green. Green was inextricably linked to Leonard in Toronto and he’s taking a two-year, $25 million deal from the Los Angeles Lakers.

TORY SAYS THANKS BUT NO MERCY WHEN YOU COME BACK

Mayor Tory tweeted thanks to Leonard Saturday but vowed that the Clippers will be in for fight when they visit Toronto. Anguish, moaning on Twitter

Courier, motorist nasty confrontation at Bremner and York

Captures from a video posted to Reddit show part of a confrontation between a bike courier and a motorist Thursday at Bremner Blvd and York St. In a separate post, the driver claims the courier ran a red light. The driver honked and the courier kicked the car. Oh my. Then the man got out of his car and the capture at left shows him telling traffic to stop while they sort out their drama. At centre is a shot of the courier grabbing the motorist from behind. They both fall to the ground and the courier apparently thinks better of it all. He scurries to his bike and rides off. Life in downtown Toronto.
