Tram slips off tracks on Bathurst between Dundas, Queen

A streetcar derailed on Bathurst Street Thursday afternoon. Police say no injuries were reported and there is no indication what caused it to slip off the tracks. Buses were called in as streetcars backed up behind the derailed tram. Pretty much of an all-day job.

Frightening hot dog contest somehow forces you to watch

It is the Fourth of July holiday in the US and Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest was held in New York’s Coney Island. A man named Joey “Jaws” Chestnut won it for the 12th time by eating 71 hot dogs and buns, 21 more than the nearest competition. Truly frightening. Also winning a championship Thursday was Las Vegas native Miki Sudo, who won her sixth-consecutive women’s title by wolfing down 31 franks. Sudo, 33, who inhaled 37 franks last year, soundly defeated contender Michelle Lesco, who ate 26 hot dogs.

Chinese name-calling seems to suggest Canada hit a nerve

China has warned Canada not to be “naive” in thinking that the US can help smooth over issues between the two countries. Ottawa has been engaged in trying to align support from the US, Europe and elsewhere  It is a technique that may or may not work but either way, it seems to have touched a nerve in Beijing. Unelected politburo big-wigs, underlings of the equally unelected Xi Jinping, were sufficiently stung to resort to a lecture about Canadian methods. The little North American democracy, says the autocratic giant, is being naive to think that such maneuvers can be helpful. Maybe. But they say name-calling is the last resort of the insecure.

Laurie says bye to hard-luck old bank at Mt Pleasant/Manor

The lady known as Laurie has left a neatly-printed note at the door of the hard-luck former bank building at Mt. Pleasant and Manor Rd. to say that Birch Bistro is closed. The note is in the same polite style and delicate handwriting that Laurie used to announce that Birch would be opening in early 2017. It seemed then like a big undertaking. Rent cannot be cheap. The checkered history of the place as Celestin and Bar Mar had marked the spacious and pleasant location with serious doubt for many locals. The note carries no indication of why Birch closed but it includes the little pastry shop next door.

Kid from Fort Smith odds-on pick for IMF manging director

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, 54, is the favourite to replace Christine Lagarde as managing director of the International Monetary Fund, according to an online oddsmaker. Carney is recalled as “The Kid from Fort Smith,” a town in the Northwest Territories of less 2,000 when he was born. He went on to excel at Harvard, worked on Wall St. and became Governor of the Bank of Canada.  He is due to leave the BOE in January and is placed at 7-to-2 to take the IMF job, according to UK bookie Betway. Lagarde was this week nominated as president of the European Central Bank, and is due to take up the role when Mario Draghi leaves on October 31. Carney and his British wife Diana have four children. Older car stolen off Hudson Dr. for possible use in crime

Residents of Hudson Drive in Moore Park have been told that an older model Subaru stolen overnight off the street may be used in the commission of another crime and then abandoned. As in other parts of South Bayview, cars are looted and newer models stolen by fob technology. But older cars are seldom targeted except as anonymous-looking getaway cars.

Man hunted in Deer Park coffee shop theft at Yonge/St Clair

Photos associated with this post have been removed because the principal suspect has now been identified and found to be underage. Security photos of a young man wanted for an attack on a woman in a coffee shop at Yonge and St. Clair in March have been released by police. His apparent purpose was to steal the woman’s jacket containing, as it turns out, bank cards that were used at a convenience store shortly after at Deer Park Rd. and  St. Clair West. That’s a mere block away from the scene of the crime. He is described as 18 to 20 years, short brown hair, clean shaven, wearing a shiny black jacket, black zipper sweater, dark blue jeans noticeably rolled up at the bottom, and black skater type shoes.

TWO PERSONS-OF-INTEREST

Also released are photos of two persons-of-interest in the same crime. At left below is a woman who ran out of the coffee shop at the same time as the perpetrator. He fled north and she ran south on Yonge. The man at the right below is said to be about 50 and is seen accompanying the young man at the convenience store where the bank cards were used.

Festival off “because of rain” but many scoff at this excuse

Roxodus Music Fest promised to re-create in Canada a great (or possibly notorious) tradition similar to the aging hippie-fest in the UK at Glastonbury. This was to be the first-ever Roxodus. The organizer, MF Live Inc., promised appearances by Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd snd many other bands on stage at the Edenvale Airport grounds in Stayner just south of Collingwood from July 11 to 14. But Wednesday the festival released this plaintiff note cancelling everything because of wet conditions. Fans are outraged at the loss of the music and the vague information on refunds. Many fans have spent big money to travel to Toronto for the concert. Barrie Today (link below) says it has heard but cannot confirm that Huronia West OPP are investigating the cancellation.

To our Roxodus Family,
During the past couple of months, our venue at Edenvale Airport has battled tremendous rainy weather that has impacted our ability to produce the festival. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of the Roxodus Music Festival this year.  Our team has worked tirelessly to find a solution in which the show can go on but unfortunately, we could not make it happen this year. Our dream of producing a ‘once in a lifetime experience’ has been put on hold as we take the much-needed time to nurture our venue into a premier landmark in Ontario. We sincerely thank all of the artists, sponsors, partners, and neighbors who have supported us from the very beginning. The embrace from our community has meant the world to us and we hope to one day see our dream come to life. Information about ticket refunds will be released shortly.
Sincerely, The Roxodus Team

Iacocca created Mustang, revived Chrysler with K Car, Jeep

Lee Iacocca, the son of Italian immigrants who rose through the ranks at the Ford Motor Co. and created the first Mustang in 1965, has died at age 94. When he got too big for the Ford family, Iacocca was fired. He went to failing Chrysler where he saved the company by creating the K Car and turning the Jeep into a family car. Iacocca died Tuesday at his home in Bel-Air, Calif., of complications from Parkinson’s disease, his daughter Lia Iacocca Assad told the Washington Post.
