Whole Foods retreats after HOC vote condemns poppy ban

As Saturday dawns, Whole Foods has the doubtful distinction of being the only grocery store in history to have been denounced in a House of Commons motion for its brainless decision to prevent employees from wearing a poppy. Of course, the poppy is an especially Canadian thing. But it’s entirely apolitical and hardly obscure, even in the darkest recesses of Whole Foods headquarters in Austen, Texas. Nonetheless, Whole Foods geniuses remained stubborn. As fury rolled across Canada early Friday, Whole Foods doubled down on its refusal. It took a call from the Minister of Veterans Affairs, the HOC vote and maybe a call from Jeff Bezos, Amazon tycoon, owner of WF and the richest man in the world, for the company to change its mind. On a sunny South Bayview Friday with warm week to come

This bright November Friday heralds a week of nice weather across South Bayview. The Bulldog did errands and saw (upper left) a gang of Greenwood College kids enjoying the parkette outside school. Be safe guys. Below that on the left is another C-19 new reality — the heated and distanced waiting area at Summerhill Market on Summerhill Ave. We like it. At upper right is sunny South Bayview about 11 a.m. at Millwood Rd. People are busy and lazy all at once. Enjoy folks. Lower left, these red maple bushes on Welland Ave. can be seen all over Toronto now. They rival the flag itself as a national symbol. At lower right, the fine new home rising at Garfield Ave and MacLennan Ave is no doubt going to be a stunner. Go big and go home.

Pottery Rd stub also known as the world shortest speedway

This collision Thursday afternoon occurred on the remaining stub of Pottery Rd. in Leaside. It looks as if someone was turning into a parking spot at Loblaws and someone was too close. Pottery Rd. extends barely 100 metres from the Bayview extension to Moore Ave and is known to some as the world’s shortest speedway. Drivers stoked up from flying along the extension are known to maybe slow for the stop sign at Moore. The driver here suffered minor injuries.

Local businesses help Leaside and area warm clothing drive

A used clothing drive called Keep Toronto Warm launched by New Circles Community Services is being supported by local businesses. If you can’t make it to the store email for a porch pick-up.⠀Email admin@charlenekalia.com to enter or fill out a ballot at the store.

Union says GM agrees to once-again build trucks in Oshawa

Union president Jerry Dias has announced a $1.3 billion investment by General Motors to build an unnamed pickup truck at the Oshawa GM plant. Dias made the announcement Thursday morning at the Sheraton Centre. GM has signed a new tentative contract agreement with Unifor auto workers in St. Catharines and Oshawa. Sources to the talks indicated the two sides struck a deal at 2:45 a.m. for current work in St. Catharines and Oshawa plants, with many ideas also discussed, including expanding GM’s Canadian footprint once again.

A note of caution

If fulfilled, the plan is immensely important to the Ontario economy which has relied on the auto industry especially in Oshawa for more than a century. But such announcements at contract-signing time are often subject to change after the excitement of the moment. Caution may be in order.

Perplexing failure of trucker to avoid woman in crosswalk

Wednesday has seen a fatal accident at Mill St and Cherry St in which the driver of a cement truck struck a woman in the crosswalk during the noon hour in clear weather. She died of her injuries at the scene. It’s not clear from the TPS release if the driver even saw her, nor is there any mention of the traffic lights at this signalized corner. The woman, 67, was crossing Cherry from west to east as the truck, eastbound on Mill, turned right onto Cherry. Police are asking for any video which might help explain this perplexing fatality.
